1st Trimester

Damn agave nectar!

'm at work and just ate 2 huge banana muffins made with AGAVE NECTAR.

I had no idea that our receptionist would use this sugar substitute. I am freaking out.

I just read that AGAVE NECTAR causes m/c, birth defects, is a known terrogen and can cause birth defects! I'm waiting for the DR's office to call me back.

I got the information from google. Is this info wrong...can I relax? Should I try and make myself sick?

Re: Damn agave nectar!

  • Deep breaths! I looked it up and I think the birth defects and issues come with very high doses. You only ate 2 muffins...you should be fine. That stuff is super sweet so I doubt she put that much into the batter.

  • I had never heard that it was dangerous, so after I read your post I googled it as well. Looks like some websites do say that supposedly increases the risk of miscarriage and birth defects in 1st tri...

That said, don't stress about it. I personally don't think you should make yourself sick. I'm guessing consuming it once during your pregnancy won't cause any damage. If it was that bad, it would be on the common list of things to avoid. My doctor mentioned a bunch of stuff to avoid, and agave nectar wasn't even on the list.

I'm sure we've all consumed things we shouldn't while pregnant and then had that "oops" moment. DH and I weren't TTC so I had a couple drinks in the time between conception and BFP. Of course I worry about that sometimes, but what can you do? Chances are, everything will be ok.

  • Well the nurse called me back and said she can't calm my nerves. She doesn't know much about Agave except to avoid ALL sugar substitutes and herbal supplements. She said no need to throw up it is already in my system :o( Yikes.

She said if it does cause birth defects it won't hurt a 7 week pregnancy. She said you are SOOOO early that at 7 weeks there is only a tiny bit of circulation and not much brain matter that can be effected. I hope she's right.

I was so worked up that I forgot to ask her about the claims on google that it causes m/c.

My hubby read "online" that women with lower progesterone levels can have uterine contractions after eating Agave and that can be the cause of m/c.((( Pls take that with a grain of salt, he found that on google.)))

Well I have scared myself enough today that I won't be eating anymore baked goods from coworkers lol. I meditated today that my uterus is calm and I told her not to contract.  :o)
