Pre-School and Daycare

Daycare is closed the rest of the week? Help! What to do?

I'm on maternity leave so I'm not taking my son to daycare (I can't take the new baby on the subway yet- too many germs) so I don't talk to the teachers like I normally do.

Anyway, dh said to me last night "you know, daycare is closed Wed-Mon for the holiday".  Um- really?  You tell me this now?  I have to figure out how to entertain a toddler all day while I'm also taking care of a newborn?

So- help!  I tried our local Y and some other Gymboree type places but everything is either closed for the holiday week (yes- NYC totally shuts down!) or they dont have drop in's.

It's going to be 95 degrees all week or raining so the park is only an option for so long.  I can't go to the Children's museum because they don't let strollers in and I don't have a bjorn/ergo.  I'll go to the Natural History museum (dinosaurs) if I can handle the bus with a stroller, carseat and toddler.

What else can I do with a very active toddler?  Any craft projects?  Of course, this is the week my best friend goes to Sesame Place and my step-mom is in Europe.  Murphy's law, right?

Thanks!

  • How about getting a couple of DVD's?  You can let him watch one to keep him quiet while the baby naps.  DD likes to play with Play Doh--a few cans of those with some cookie cutters and lots of encouragement to make different things should keep him occupied for a good while.  I saw some really cute easels at Toys R Us...one side has a roll of paper for painting, coloring, or drawing, and the other side is a magnetic chalkboard.  I've been considering purchasing one for DD since she likes to draw and color--those would be great for rainy days when we can't go outside.  I saw you mentioned there would be rain in your area, so that may be an option for your son as well.
  • Loading the player...
  • Books, puzzles, sorting activities, crayons, magnets for the fridge... maybe a "new" toy that you could wrap and have him open (even if it's just an old toy he forgot about), computer games if he can do them - there are some that only require the keyboard - kneebouncers.com is one I know off the top of my head.

    You'll survive!  Plently of moms are at home full-time with a toddler and a newborn - it's do-able : )

They have my utmost respect.  I'm terrified!  LOL

  • Aww dont fret!! All those options above are plenty to keep your toddler busy.. I SAH and work (ugh) with the 2 monsters and its not soo bad....  just need to structure your time and activities....  It's def! do-able!
  • Lol, ya you will survive!  I do it all day, everyday. : )
  • I bought new markers and found the play-doh I hid (he made a mess last time).  I went through all the legos, puzzles and other stuff I could find and orgnaized it.  I also bought corn muffin mix (he likes to cook) and cookie dough.

My buliding has an indoor pool so I invited a friend and her son over later in the week to go swimming. I haven't been cleared for swimming yet (post baby) but I'm 6 weeks today.  I also have to figure out what to do with dd while I take ds swimming, but I might do it if I'm desparate.

My only fear is that ds isn't good with naps at home so he will get cranky around 4pm if he doesn't get one.  I'm going to try to keep him on the daycare time schedule so we'll see how it goes.

DH promised to make me apple martinis at night when he gets home and to relieve me so I can have at least one hour of peace and quiet.  Really- power to stay at home moms.  6 days home full time with 2 kids scares me more than doing a homicide trial (I'm a lawyer).  At least I can put the defendant in handcuffs if he gets unruly!  LOL.

  • Never underestimate the power of novelty! If you tape together several large pieces of easel paper on the (hard) floor and plop him in the middle with some markers, he might have a lot of fun with it! Or make him a tent with sheets/chairs and set up a train set inside. Or have a picnic lunch somewhere unexpected.

My DD spent ONE HOUR today playing with Crayola Model Magic. It's very soft clay (like marshmallows) that will dry when left out overnight. You can use cookie cutters with it or stamps. But what's cool is that you can color on it with markers while it's still moist and change the colors. DD loves it. Today she used it to cover up a large twig she found outside, and it took her an hour! We've also used them to make "cookies" and tokens for games.

Good luck! You can do it!
