Postpartum Hives?

So for the past week or so I have been getting these raised red areas mostly on my thighs and belly. They itch like crazy and seem to come and go in different areas. I thought maybe I was getting bit by something, but no one else in the house is having this problem and I wouldn't think I'd be the only one getting bit by something.

I began to wonder if it was pregnancy related so I googled postpartum hives and apparently this is a pretty common thing, but there's no medical information on it or on treatment. All the search results are from forums with tons of women describing the same problem.

Has anyone on here experienced this? I'm going to the OB today because my c/s incision has also decided to give me trouble :( So, I'm going to ask about it then too.

  • oh my gosh! this is so me! it's not a whole lot, usually i will get one or two at a time.  on my face mostly.  i had my appt yesterday- i should have asked. let me know what the dr says.  i figured it would go away when my body figures itself out again... hopefully someday soon!

  • I had the same problem  It showed up at the same time as yours and in the same places.  It started to get better around 8 weeks but I don't think it completely went away until 10 weeks.  It was extremely itchy and and little bumps started coming up when I kept scratching.

I never got around to going to the doctor for it but maybe they can give you some kind of steroid cream.  I used OTC hydrocortisone cream and it didn't really help.

From what I've read it seems to me more common in mothers of boys.  They think it may be an allergic reaction to the tissue left behind in the uterus.  That's why it starts to clear up after the PP bleeding ends.

  • Could be PUPPP.  It usually shows up during pregnancy, particularly third tri (showed up at 22 weeks for me... nice) but also shows up in some women after labor.  Mine went away (after seeing a dermatologist for treatment) around 30 weeks but then showed back up for a few days after I had LO.

I read that too. The OB was no help. He just said that if it doesn't go away I should see a dermatologist. You would think they would have heard about this if so many women have it.

And did you get a little white bump in the middle with a red inflamed area all around it after scratching?

  • A week after my baby was born I broke out into hives that covered my body from my toes to my scalp. I went to the emergency room because it happened during the middle of the night. I got an injection of benadryl. They went away immediately and I've never had them again. The doctor didn't know what caused them.
