No Kill Cat Shelter?

I found a mother cat and two still nursing kittens yesterday. I have already contacted Good Mews but unfortunately they are full. Any other ideas what I can do? I have a carrier but I'm not sure that the momma cat will let me "catch" her. I would love to keep them, but we already have three dogs.

  • The Atlanta Humane Society on Howell Mill is no-kill but they won't take strays.  You have to sign paperwork that you are turning in your pet.  If you feel comfortable with that, they are a great organization.

Furkids is also no kill and awesome but they are typically full. Definitely worth checking though, they took 3 feral kittens that were living in my attic and made them into loving members of society.  =)

Ditto the rec for Fur Kids.

Atlanta Humane is not a no kill facility, despite them giving the general public the impression that they are. I would not recommend taking them there.

  • We LOVE PAWS Atlanta!  They are a great no-kill shelter that has "cat rooms" where the animals aren't caged.  It's just awesome.

From what I understand, AHS will put an animal down if it is too aggressive or sick to be rehabilitated. But they don't even take those kinds of animals in the first place. I had a street dog I rescued and needed to rehome and they told me to "get that dog out of here" because he was too aggressive. We ended up rehoming him to my mother's farm.

Not sure about cats. When I volunteered there many years ago, they killed cats. I always volunteered for the earliest shift b/c if you got all the cages cleaned quickly, you could spend time loving on the animals before the shelter opened to the public for the day. I watched a clinic employee come in to the cat room with a carrier and take one of the cats. She ripped its card cage up. Me, being the naive 22 year old I was, asked if she was going to be adopted. The woman looked at me and said "no" and walked away with the cat. There were at least a dozen open runs and this particular cat, though older, had been featured as one of the AJC pets of the week the weekend before. I cannot fathom why they put it down. I am sure they had some "valid reason" though. That was the start of my disgust with Atlanta Humane.

They definitely kill dogs because I know the shelter staff at the shelter where they dispose of the bodies. Yeah, they don't even handle that themselves.

  • Another +1 for Furkids. I have a friend that volunteers with them and always raves about them. She has adopted several cats from there as well.
  • Thanks ladies, I emailed fur kids this morning, just waiting to here back from them.
