Question for moms who pump...

My DS has refused to nurse and I am trying to figure out a pumping schedule while managing a 2 year old as well.  How often do you pump and at what time of day?  Everyday is different for me but some days I pump alot and then other days I only pump a few times but seem to end up with the same amount of milk.  Also, do you pump in the middle of the night?

Re: Question for moms who pump...

  • I try to sleep at night, so no pumping.  I am currently a SAHM, so I pump after DS has his big morning feedind and once more when I get the time.

Do you supplement with formula or is that enough for his feedings?

  • I pump every 4-5 hours.

  • Before I returned to work, I tried to pump every 3 hours to help build up a supply in the freezer and to keep my body on its schedule. I was also getting up around 2-3 a.m. to pump.

However, since returning to work I pump about 4 times a day (5 a.m., 11 a.m., 4-5 p.m. and then before bed) and, if and only if, I wake up in the middle of the night and feel as though I need to pump I'll pump then too. I still try to nurse once in a while and typically do that in the middle of the night if LO wakes up since it's easier and faster than having to wait for a bottle to warm. If I nurse at night, my son usually only nurses on one side before falling asleep and I end up pumping the other side.

I'm getting ready to start the second half of my maternity leave (yay!) so my schedule may change again. I hope you are able to set up something that works for you!

  • I feed LO before going to work around 7AMish, pump druing lunch around 11:30AM, and again around 3PM.  I'll be home in time for her afternoon feeding *crossing fingers*

Before returning to work I pumped within an hour and a half of feeding LO to build up my supply. I did this about 2-3 times a day. I pumped at night only if I felt really full.

  • I only pump when I'm not w/ DD, but since I'm back to work I am only getting to BF her 1-2 times a day so I guess I'm more of a pumper now :(

Anyway, here's when I pump: before work around 6am, btw 10:30 & 11am, btw 3:30 & 4pm, then I BF DD 1-2 times before she goes to bed & I pump before I go to bed around 10:30pm.  I get more than she eats at this point so I am able to freeze some.

  • I work full time so I pump.  I feed Michael at 7am, pump at 11am and 3 pm at work and then feed him a few times at night.  I send the frozen BM to daycare but they also have a can of formula incase he is very hungry or I did not pump enough.  I know they have to use it some because his poop was different this weekend.

  • I would pump as often as you can to try to keep your supply up...just freeze all the extra milk. Is there any way you could meet with an LC to try to get your son back to nursing? Good luck!!

I've been to a BF suppport group with lactation comsultants there.  I have also called the hospital LC with no improvement.  Similac also has LC available and nothing has really helped.  I have kind of stopped trying to nurse him.  Now he nurses in the middle of the night and 1st thing in the morning but the mroning feed he needs a bottle about 40 minutes later.  He just doesn't nurse enough.
