potty question

Is it normal for a 5y.o. to still rely on his parents to wipe his butt for him??

My husband's son (my step-son) still requires a little assistance when it comes to going number 2. I was just wondering when this should stop and when we should try to get him to do it himself... He started Kindergarten last week, and I'm assuming NOW is the time to deal with this.

Any advice??

Re: potty question

  • Maybe buy him some of those flushable wipes?  That's what my 4 y/o uses.

  • He has them, but he won't wipe on his own.

His mother is the type who won't let him do anything on his own, and I think DH is just so used to it that he doesn't think its a big deal. I obviously do, with him being at school 4hrs a day. Teachers aren't going to wipe for him (and I don't blame them!!).

  • My DD had this same issue until she was 6!  Her excuse was she couldn't get it as clean as me!! I bought her own wipes because she didn't like the ones we had and she's been wiping ever since!

hmmm... sometimes its just that simple, isn't it?? I never thought of making something about the process of him doing it "special." I'll have to brainstorm about this w/ hubby, b/c with him in Kindergarten, he needs to learn how to do this & how to tie shoes.

    Thanks!
