Now I can't eat pre-washed bagged salad???

Good morning everyone! I'm a little frustrated because the more I go on the internet, the smaller my list of "safe" foods gets. I've been eating pre-washed salads in the bag because of convenience, but now I read that there's a risk of listeria? Really? Has anyone heard of this? I was excited to finally find salad dressing that doesn't have egg yolk in it and now I'm afraid to eat lettuce.

Your thoughts are appreciated. :)

  • Dont read stuff online!!!!!! Just ask your doctor.  I was doing that, and it made me panic and my doctor told me if I have any questions, ask her!!! Most stuff you read, isnt true, or is true but some doctors have different opinions about them!  Just see what your doctor says about stuff, and what their opinion is, and go from there! You chose your doctor because you trust them, right?

  • I haven't come across that restriction - but I guess you could give the lettuce a quick rinse before eating it.

Honestly, the internet will tell you that everything is dangerous, everything is bad for you etc. Talk with your doc about food concerns.

  • I can't eat it because it's making me want to throw up, but other than that - I think it's fine. I do find that some goes bad quickly, so toss those pieces, but I don't take pregnancy restrictions too seriously. I just practice everything in moderation.
  • bagged salad is one huge bacteria-fest.  It's not just listeria, but the lettuce has been in the news for things like salmonella and e coli over the last few years.

Just buy a head of lettuce and cut it yourself it you're worried.  But remember, it's hard to completely avoid bagged lettuce if you eat out a lot.  Most restaurants and fast food places use it on their salad bars and sandwiches.

  • I would just talk to your doctor, I know i have heard about the salad. but i think there is just a scare from that because there have been so many recalls on the pre-packaged salad due to contamination, that is the only reason i can think of

  • If you avoid everything the interwebs say you can't eat while pregnant you're going to starve.  Go by what your doctor tells you to avoid and you'll be fine.

  • What? I never heard of that..and ate salad from a bag with DD and have done it with this pregnancy too. To be honest, I even had caesar dressing once in a blue moon..my brother is a chef and said that the acidity from lemons, and the oil in the dressing to emulsify it, makes the chance of any issues from raw egg yolk really slim. So I figured two or so times of having dressing in my pregnancy wasn't a big deal. I think this kind of stuff goes too far sometimes. Sure, I don't want to eat fish with mercury and I can survive 9 months of avoiding it because I certainly don't want to put my child at any risk but at what point does this kind of stuff stop? I would talk to your doctor about what is safe to eat instead of looking it up on the internet..before you know it you won't be able to have anything but water with lemon or something ridiculous.

  • If you keep looking at stuff online you'll probably find something that tells you that everything is bad. Stop driving yourself crazy and just talk to your doctor.

  • A coworker recently found a dead frog at the bottom (yes, she ate most of it first) of her 5 lb bag of spinach.  I've since learned all sorts of things I didn't want to know about bagged salad.
  • I don't like how bagged salad tastes (like chlorine) even after being washed, so I just cut up heads of lettuce.  I don't see anything wrong in eating it though as long as you wash it beforehand.  That goes for anything in the produce section though really..whether it's bagged or not.

  • I was told to avoid it but not because of listeria.  Because there is so much other bacteria in there.  The risk of getting something else is higher, not only while your pregnant.

Some people will take tylenol while other wonts - just to be on the safe side.  I suggest making sure you trust your doctor with decisions like this and them.

My Dr requires that I take a pregnancy class through them. Since I was with another Dr and I am switching I am taking it a little bit later than some of the others. I really like this because I will get a crash course on everything.  It is so difficult when you are reading books and online sources.

  • Thanks, everyone! I'm going to talk my doctor when I go back next week. I trust him more than the internet, but I didn't want to call them just for that. In the mean time, cutting up and washing lettuce isn't bad at all. At least I'll have peace of mind until I find out for sure. :)

  • Actually I was watching America's test kitchen and they did a test on pre-washed salad.  They said that there was actually more bacteria on salad that was pre-washed and then washed again at home as compared to the bagged salad that was  just pre-washed.  Of course you could just buy unbagged salad but I don't know if that would be any better.
  • I've been buying bags of spinach lately and washing it before we eat it. Rethinking this as we speak.

Just curious Jen - does your doc charge for this class? I think it is a great idea, and hopefully they do it for their patients gratis.
