Babies: 3 - 6 Months

So we just bought a boat...

I didn't want the boat because I didn't think we'd use it a lot... BUT... DH swears it will be great for spending "family time" together next summer. DD will be a year in April... We don't live on a lake but live within an hours drive from a lot of different lakes.

How realistic is he being???

Re: So we just bought a boat...

  • It really depends.

I'm lazy, so if I had to drive an hour to go on the boat, I would rarely do it. Its just not that important to me. But some people do use it that much.

  • I think he's being fairly realistic.

It's a great thing to have, and it's not like it'll expire in a year. I miss having a boat - it was a great excuse to drive through traffic to the lake to spend the day up there.
  • Our neighbors do not live on the water and have a boat.  They have a 1 yo & 3 yo that they take out on the river almost every weekend.  They set up a mini bed for them and they nap on the boat during the day.  I think it is very possible.  DH would love to do it if we could afford it, but will be buying a camper in the spring instead.
  • Jealous!!!

We live ON a lake and don't own a boat.  What kind did you buy?  We would love a pontoon boat.

  • I think it will be great!  And so much fun.   I say just enjoy it.

I wanted a pontoon too!!! We got a 1998, 18 ft, Sea Ray. DH wanted something we could pull skiers and tubes behind. We have a canopy in the back for shade for DD to nap next summer... That was one of my requirements. Just sucks its at the end of the summer (we just picked it up over the weekend) but that is why we got a good deal on it I guess.

    That's good to hear!

You will use the camper a lot I bet! Our friends have a camper so our plan for next summer is to team up on the weekends, they bring the camper and we bring the boat!

There are a few nice lakes that are only like 20 minutes away and we only live 10 miles from the Bay of Green Bay... There are just nicer inland lakes a little farther away. We do have lots of options though.

  • I think it's very realistic.  I grew up on a lake and we looooved being on the water!

With that being said, I would NOT want to own a boat now.  They're a pain in the asss to keep up with.  The maintenence sucks and is super expensive (storing it, winterizing, etc).

That would be awesome!  We took 4 camping trips last summer (when the girls were 3 & 1).  We only did 2 this year due to Dylan... We took our kids out on the neighbors boat last summer but now that they have their LO (which she was PG w/ last year) and we have 1 more it would be chaos instead of relaxing - 5 kids under 5 stuck on a boat!

I know what you mean... We just got a quote yesterday from where we'll be storing it because we only have a two stall garage and it wouldn't fit anyway. $450 for the year... Ugh!!! I know they are money pits... I hear it from everyone, but DH really wanted it. I just hope we use it. If we use it and DD grows up with great memories of being out on a boat then it'll be worth it.

Absolutely!  And besides, you own it now so you might as well think positive and enjoy it!  :)

  • Honestly, I love boating, but I would never buy a boat.  I'd rather be great friends with people who have boats, because in my experience, boat ownership = a lot of work, and time spent cleaning it, etc - DH's dad owned a boat for years, and when it wasn't in the water, he was cleaning it, painting it, etc.

I have no doubt that DH will love putting the work into the boat... He is just that type of person. He relieves stress by washing our cars and doing yard work (he's weird like that). So I wasn't concerned about that... I was more worried about that fact of having a 1 year old and whether or not it is realistic to think she'll be good on a boat and enjoy it. If she gets scared or hates it that could really put the kabash to boating on the weekends!!!

  • We have a boat and use it all summer long, every weekend (we ski, wakeboard, our son likes to go tubing, swimming, etc). However, we only live literally less then one mile from the river and the boat club we belong to. If we had to drive an hour each way, we'd probably get there a lot less.

GL to you and hope you enjoy it! It is a great way to spend family time!

Cost really depends on how much work you're willing to put into it. DH and I change the oil each year and winterize the boat ourselves. We cover it and store it in our garage. Just costs us the oil, filter, antifreeze and time. Really not expensive at all. (we have a 21 foot Ski Supreme)

  • no joke - if we owned a boat i would do the hour drive every day just to go on the boat if i could.
  • We are boat owners and we love it!  We recently moved our boat to a dock that is closer - we were keeping it on a river about 45 min away but we got lucky and had a friend buy a house ON a river that is VERY close and he lets us keep our boat and boat lift on his dock for free...very cool.  Our DD grew up on our boat and is now skiing at 5 yrs of age, she loves it.   DS, who is 4 months now, has been out on it a few times as well.  We didn' t  use it that much this summer since DS was so small, but you can bet that next year (when he's old enough to wear sunscreen and all that jazz) that we will be out there.  We tube, wakeboard, ski...it's an awesome time.  Plus it's so fun to go on "boat dates" with DH, we sometimes get a sitter and take the boat up to the waterfront restaurants, have a bottle of wine and relax.
  • We love boating! I think it's a great way to spend time together. We only took LO out once so far, but he seemed to enjoy it. He slept the whole time. Next summer we'll take him out a lot more.
