Babies: 3 - 6 Months

Sick over my daycare situation..

I posted last night about my frustrating daycare situation (link).

(Switched from in-home daycare to center, about the same price but instead of a 6:1 ratio, it's 2:1. Then yesterday when I tried to switch to 4 days they told me the price went up $25/wk (to $285/wk) and they got rid of the option to go 4 days a week -- same price no matter how many days you go. I'm mad because of the lack of communication. I signed her up 3 weeks ago and they didn't tell me they were changing the available schedules OR pricing!)

I am just sick over it now. I found another daycare in town with openings for much cheaper ($230/wk for 5 days). They would also allow me to bring her 4 days and DH would stay with her on Mondays. I have a tour scheduled for 3pm today. I don't even know if I'll like it, but I feel like I don't want to change daycare centers again!!! I am starting work tomorrow (DH is staying home with LO) and she is supposed to start daycare on Tuesday. This is so stressful :(

Oh, and I would lose my $500 deposit at the other place if I switched her now.......

  • Well the good thing is that she hasn't started yet so it won't matter to her if you switch.  Losing that $500 is going to suck but I'm one of those "cut my nose off to spite my face" people and I'd pull her just because I'd be pissed at how they handled the whole thing.  Let me know how the visit goes at the new place!

  • I am not super familiar w/ how daycares work since I am luck to have family watch DD (at least for now), but did you sign a contract?  Or did they present you with contractual rates or something?  If yes & then they changed it you have a right to demand your deposit back & move your child or demand the pricing originally presented to you.

  • We've been through two daycares and just started with a nanny yesterday. I've lost deposits, supply fees (don't get me started), etc.

I totally get the frustration and while I wish we'd have done this from the start. That being said, I'm happy with where we are now.

You just gotta do what you gotta do.

  • We went through something similar but it was AFTER the kids had been at the new daycare for two weeks (old daycare raised tuition two weeks after we started there, never told us about the increase when we went on the tour though I know they had to have known about it then). We ended up switching the kids to a daycare that's much more convienent to where we live and costs the same amount as the new, increased rates at the other center (and this new place is MUCH nicer and the girls who work there are wonderful).

I, however, only lost out on my $30 registration fee.

    GL with your decision!

  • I would see how things go at the tour today, but if it were me, I'd be so angry at the other place that I'd want to switch in a heartbeat.  The way they treated you and kept you in the dark about the prices and options is bad business.  In the long run, I would want a daycare that was totally up front with me about everything, including prices.  Best of luck with whatever decision you make!

  • Heres the thing, they weren't open and honest with you, and when it comes to the care of your child that just feels icky!  It may not seem like a big deal to some people, but $100 a month (The difference in thier rate) is a bill or contribution towards savings, and adds up to over a thousand dollars a year.  Thats a lot of money to screw someone out of by not being honest.  As I see it, they waited to spring it on you until they thought you didn't have a way out.

Now this $500 deposit, you're pretty much going to have to kiss goodbye and just forget you ever paid it.  I know its not the same, but I replanned my wedding several times for various reasons and I had to let more than one $1500 deposit go, it stung at first, but once I put it out of my mind I was happy about the choice I made.

I agree. You need to review the terms. You may have an argument to receive your security deposit back, but it could be a fight.

This!  If you signed a contract, read it b/c they should have to notify you in advance of rate changes or if your rate is stated on the contract then you have a right to your deposit back.  I'm home, so call me if you need anything!! GL BFF!
