Is it possible that the constant commentary of a 2yr old can slowly drive a person INSANE????
And to think there was a time that I was 'concerned' about her speech development. I remember having many a conversations with Sue and Jeni about language dev. ~
omg- she doesn't stop jabbering EVER. If you don't acknowledge whatever she says the first time- it gets repeated (and repeated, and repeated). While I LOVE that she now communicates so well- it can drive me insane. From the moment she gets up until the moment she goes to bed- she is jabbering.
By the time DH gets home- I just want complete silence for 10 minutes. lol.
Sooooo--- watch what you 'wish' for ladies. It can come back and bite you in the butt for sure!
Re: The constant commentary of a 2 yr old...
yesssss it can drive a person over the edge And when they repeat themlelves its not just mommy mommy mommy, it's is a full sentance over and over and over. I say "I heard you the first time" several times a day. But they just don't care... sigh...
That is DS. He talks all day long, asks endless questions and if you don't answer right away or if he doesn't hear you he says, "Mom, I'm talking to you!" complete with attitude.
I talk a lot so I can't complain about having a kid who talks a lot, but it drives DH nuts!
HAHA!
The language development dork in me has been thinking a lot about this constant commentary lately. Like when does the social filter develop? - the one that makes them understand that it is unnecessary to verbalize about EVERYTHING (notably things that happen multiple times, the same way, each day?) Is this a result of our constant feeding them info? (oh look, the man is getting in the truck. I wonder where is is going in the big blue truck. There he goes. Look, he stopped at the stop sign and blah blah blah) OR can little brains not separate talking from thinking - do they just talk all of their thoughts?
There have been times where I have literally wondered if DD is okay because I think, "we literally talked about that 5 minutes ago, why are we discussing it again!?"
And your title is exactly right - constant commentary. Conveniently though, the commentary is often funny.
LOL Alaina's talking has really picked up lately, too. She's constantly asking me, "What are you doing?" and just chatters all day long. I kinda like it, though. It's easier to know what she wants and I can have more like a real conversation with her instead of me talking to myself.
Oh and I have no idea when the filter kicks in. DD announces that she pooped/peed, no matter who the audience which is funny and a little embarrassing at the same time.
She also repeats herself until she's acknowledged. What you doing? Mommy. What you doing? What you doing, mommy? AAAhhh. She's fun.
lol- its sooooo true.
I often hear, 'Mama, I am talking to you' ~ ::sigh:: or she will say, 'see, see, see' if you don't anknowledge what she is pointing out, be it the mail truck, or the squirrel, or the whatever....
Yes I think it is slowly driving me insane! I have 2 of them talking all day long and they never shut up. They also repeat themselves until I acknowledge that they are talking. DD wants me to watch everything now too. She will say "Watch me, mommy" and I can't just say "okay". I have to say "ok, K I am watching you do xyz." I am glad they are both able to communicate well but like you it can drive me crazy some days.
They are both also in the "Why" phase so I feel like I am being interrogated all day. Most of the time my answers are followed by another "why, mommy". Some days when DH gets home I tell him he is on "why" duty because I can't answer another question. I am glad they are curious and want to learn about things going on around them but some days it drives me nuts.
HAHA! I am right there with ya. My family always asks me if he ever stops talking... the answer is noooo. Sometimes I will ask him to talk a bit quieter (especially now - poor Noel needs a BIT of quiet every now and then) and his response is to fake cry and announce, "NOOO, I TALK LOUUUUDDDDD!"
I really was concerned he wouldn't talk b/c he didn't really start until 21ish months... yeeeeah, not an issue!!
