WDYT of Keira?

We had a hard time agreeing on names, and our last name doesn't go well with many of the girl's names we do like. DH and I both love this name, we basically are calling our LO by it already, but I just don't LOVE the way it looks written out.  From my research, this is the most common accepted spelling of the name.  We've talked about the spelling Kira but DH isn't crazy about it.   Wondering which spelling you all prefer: Keira vs Kira?

Also, thoughts on the name in general.  I seem to get mixed reviews on it when I mention it to people.  A lot of people seem to not know what I'm talking about, which surprises me since Keria Knightley and Kyra Sedwick (sp?) are both fairly well known actresses.

Re: WDYT of Keira?

  • This is one of my favorite girl names. It doesn't go well at all with our last name though so we won't use it. I like Keira spelling.

The Irish traditional spelling of it is Ciara but I think too many people will mispronounce it as See-are-a spelled that way. If we were going to use it I would spell it Keira.

LOVE this name, spelled Keira. t's on the short list, and THAT'S saying a lot!! (i'm incredibly picky). Forget about the celebrities with the name (Keira Knightley is beautiful, BTW), they will soon be forgotten...

I don't mind that there are famous Keiras, I am saying that I'm surprised that so many people act as if they have never heard of the name when I mention it.

My main issue with the 'e' thrown in there is that I do not want people to think it is kee-ah-rah.

Ahhh, I got ya...  about the second thing, I think they would think /KY-ruh/ before /key-AH-ruh/ SINCE the 'i' is after the 'e'........... if that makes sense... at all LOL

I understand....I just don't want my little girl to have to ALWAYS correct people when they say her name!  DH thinks I am overreacting and it's no big deal.  But I grew up with a long, hard to pronounce last name and always dreaded the first day of school.  I just don't want to do that to her if possible.  I am just so torn bc I LOVE the name and the way it sounds with our last name!

    Thanks for all the feedback!

  • I really like the Keira.  I think it's one of those names that you don't hear often, but isn't so far out there that no one's ever heard of it.

  • FWIW, "kira kira" means sparkling or glittering in Japanese. I think that's a neat meaning for a name, so I like it spelled like that Smile

  • Love it. I don't think anyone is going to confuse it because of the "e". It is pretty straightforward.
  • I love Keira!

  • I'm surprise not many people have heard of it. It is actually VERY common in our area. I know about five Keiras (spelled this way) under the age of three in my area. It's NMS due to it's trendiness but it is a pretty name.

  • It's NMS, but Keira is the way to go in the spelling. Congrats on picking a name. :)

I love the name Keira, with that spelling. (If you spelled it Kira I would pronounce it K-eye-ra if I was reading it.)

Love it, have a friend with a 4 month old named Kiera with the i before the e. Everyone I've talked to really likes the name my friend picked for her dd, great choice!
  • My 2 year old is named Keira and we have had really positive comments on the name. My aunt actually suggested it not realizing that it was on our short list already. Everyone from my friends to my grandmother loved it. We also debated on spelling the name Keira vs. Kira. We ended up going with Keira since it is the more common version. If someone isn't sure how to pronounce/spell her name they just ask but most people get it right. Good luck with your little Keira!
