NTTCAL related: Pasta sauce

Does anyone have a good recipe for making your own sauce? I just pulled out the "Italian cooking" cookbook I got for a wedding shower present- recipe reads like this:

Mama's Best Ever Spaghetti and Meatballs

1lb lean ground beef

1/2 cup italian bread crumbs

1 egg

1 jar Ragu old world style pasta sauce

8 oz spaghetti!

Lost me with the jar of sauce! Cookbook is BS!

Thanks for your help.

  • The recipe I use also calls for a can of prepared pasta sauce, so I can't help you.

This made me laugh though as it reminded me of the time (almost two years ago) my sister made my birthday cake and announced to everyone that it was "Made from scratch!" - she used a box of Duncan Hines cake mix and a jar of icing. LOL

My grandma was notorious for buying "sara lee" cakes and heating them. Then if someone asked if she made it, she'd reply "of course I baked it!" because she did  BAKE it! I found the recipe for Carmine's Marinara sauce so that's what I'm making.

  • I sautee about 1/2 a chopped sweet onion and a few cloves of chopped garlic with some red pepper flakes in some EVOO. I then add a big can of whole tomatoes. I let that simmer then I puree w/ my immersion blender. I add a large can of tomato puree (make sure it just has tomatoes and water/salt as ingrediants, no spices). I let that cook down for a few hours and add fresh basil.  If I am making it w/o meat I add 1.5 TBSP beef bullion powder, which replaces salt and gives it a meaty flavor. Since you'll be sauteeing meat, you can add salt to taste instead.

LOL - that is funny, and cute. I hope your sauce turns out well!

  • This is my version of "Mama's Best Ever Spaghetti Sauce" - really, it is my mom's recipe and absolutely delicious.  People request it when they come over for dinner but I'm embarrassed at how easy the recipe is.  Embarrassed

    • 1 lb lean ground beef
    • 2-8oz cans tomato sauce
    • 1-4oz can tomato paste
    • Italian seasonings: lots of garlic, basil, parsley, 2 bay leaves
    • salt & pepper to taste
    • 10oz water
    1. Brown ground beef (or ground turkey, I've made it both ways), drain grease.
    2. Add tomato sauce, paste, seasonings, S&P, water and stir.
    3. (If you would like to add Italian sausage or meatballs, brown in separate pan and add to pot.)
    4. Simmer on low for 30 minutes
    5. Serve over pasta.

  • I use this recipe.  It is for lasagna, but I use the sauce for anything that requires red sauce.  It is delicious and plus it's from scratch!  Big Smile

Me too!  In fact, I have one of the top reviews of the recipe.  I'm kind of a big deal.  (j/k) *brushes shoulders*
