Breastfeeding

I get to breastfeed!

Hi Ladies!

Just wanted to introduce myself. I am currently due on September 29th with DS#2 and found out this morning that I will be able to breastfeed. I couldn't with DS#1 b/c of some of the medication that I was on. Well that has all changed.

I went to Buy Buy Baby today and got a couple of things, I am just totally lost as to when milk comes in, when to bf, how do I know if the baby is getting enough, should I pump, and what are the best products out there. (I will be honest, I probably wont buy organic, personal preference)

I am going to try to go to a Le Leche meeting in the middle of september (if I last that long) and get some more information there.

I would really appreciate any positive feedback/information that you all have.

Thanks!

  • Definitely check out kellymom.com.  It's a great site with tons of info, and very well organized.

My three main pieces of advice:

    1)  Take it week by week, day by day, feeding by feeding if need be.  Breastfeeding can be very tricky in the beginning since both of you are going to be new at this.  It takes practice, like any other skill.  But usually if you stick it out until week 6, you will see the payoffs.

    2)  Set up a support system now.  Find a lactation consultant who you can make an appointment or two with.  That was the biggest help for me.  My first night bfing was miserable (DD was small, and didn't have the right latch).  I was gritting my teeth with each feeding that night.  But I went to a breastfeeding class the next morning with a LC and it was a huge help.  I then followed up with an appointment a week later to make sure all was going well.  Have people you can call for a pep talk after a rough night.  Having someone tell you, you're doing a good job, and to keep it up can be hugely helpful after a rough night.

     3)  Trust your body and your baby.  Your body will produce enough milk, and your baby knows when he/she is hungry.  I was flipping out the first couple days cause DD wasn't interested in eating every 2 and a half hours (what my hospital recommended), if i waited 3 even 3.5 hours (i wouldn't let her go longer than that) for her hunger cues she ate much better.  I was so worried about her gaining weight, I was certain that she wasn't eating enough and something was wrong.  It wasn't, and she's been gaining weight like a champ.  With all the problems you hear about bfing, it's so easy to worry about every little thing.  Try to relax and have a little faith in your body and your baby.  The less stress you put on yourself the better.

  • Ditto all the PP's... and take a class and/ or read a book before you have the baby if you can! You will find it helpful (perhaps unlike childbirth classes).
