Maternity Clothes?

I know it's probably a little early to start thinking about purchasing some maternity clothes, but I was wondering when you all bought yours?

How far along were you? Did you purchase some essentials at first and add items as needed along the way or did you purchase whatever you wanted straight off?

Which stores/brands are the best in your opinion as far as quality and price go?

Thank you!

Re: Maternity Clothes?

  • Well,

I think everyone's different. I didn't need any maternity wear w/ G until well into my second trimester. This time around, I was wearing maternity wear by week 8. It comes down to YOUR comfort level, how bloated your body feels in the begining, and if you have any existing clothes that still fit.

I've shopped Motherhood Maternity & Old Navy. More so the first. The quality is not spectacular, but the prices are on the cheaper side. I have a hard time spending lots of cash on a single article of clothing that will only be used for a few months.

If you have a mother's club in your area, join it now. It seems wierd to without actually HAVING a kid, but you might see a lot of maternity clothing being passed around/sold and you can get it slightly used for OODLES cheaper than buying new yourself.

    Good luck, and happy shopping.

  • Most of mine this time around were hand me downs. Anything that I bought new i got from the Target Juniors Dept (empire dresses).

That said, I have a bunch of tops to pass on (and maybe some jeans) let me know if you'd like them!

  • I think I bought my 1st pair of pants at about 10 weeks. I was just so uncomfortable in my regular pants. My shirts I could wear a little longer since alot of them were a little looser fit. I loved Old Navy, Target and Motherhood. It can get really expensive, I also borrowed a ton. Congrats again!!!
  • I bought pants as early as 12 weeks, but still fit my favorite pair of low rise pants till 20 weeks. I think this all depends on how you feel in your clothing. If you can find things on discount and/or get handme-downs I suggest taking those first. Clothing is exspensive and you only get a few months of use out of it.

  • I bought some at about 12 weeks but could still use some of my pants. By 16 weeks I couldn't wear any of my reg clothes anymore. I was lucky to get lots of loaners, but bought some at ON, Gap and Destination Maternity (Pea in the pod & Motherhood Maternity combo store)

  • I'm approx 14 weeks, but haven't made the leap to maternity clothes yet. I usually wear skirts and dresses anyways, so I've just sized up in empire-waisted dresses and stick to my skirts that have stretchy waistbands. Kohl's and Target have been my go-to stores for dresses and shirts.

  • I bought my jeans from Gap maternity, and a couple of sweaters as well.I *love* the maternity tanks from target (still wear them)

I bought a couple of ruched tanks from Isabella Oliver that I wore from week 10ish until my milk came in. I'm hanging onto them to see if they'll work if my boobs shrink after I wean.

OH - and regardless of where they come from: rollover waist yoga pants are awesome :-D

  • I was wearing almost all maternity clothing by about week 14 or 15.  I got quite bloated early on, and since I don't really like skirts/dresses, it was a necessity.  I got clothing from Old Navy, Gap, Target and a little from a Pea in the Pod. I didn't want to spend a ton on maternity clothing.  Since the prices were so low, I was able to get a few more items so that I wasn't wearing the same thing day in and day out (though it felt like it by the end!).

I bought the bulk of my maternity clothing the day after Thanksgiving, so I got great deals.  Then I added little pieces here and there.

  • I was bloated enough to need them by week 10, and now I'm showing enough to need them almost exclusively.  I bought some stretchy knit skirts that are WONDERFUL from the Ann Taylor Loft Outlet, and then bought some simple maternity items from Target.

Then I discovered Burlington Coat Factory.  Ooooohhhh.... the maternity section is small, but I found a TON of clothes there that were super cheap and are nice enough to wear to work!  Yoga pants aren't exactly suitable for teachers... especially not if I expect to wear them from now until March.

Now that I have some essentials, I'm really really really hoping to get lucky and be able to borrow some so I don't have to keep shopping.  But we'll see if that happens or not.

  • I got bloated early on and nothing was comfy so I did get some early on, then I got a few things on sale to prep for the day when nothing at all would fit. I was really in full on maternity clothes by 11 weeks. Target was a mainstay, they have ok stuff. I had to resort to some pretty expensive places to get pants that were long enough. I had to go to Pea in the Pod, and Mom's the Word. I ordered some things off the web but that did not work so well for me.

I love the Inca Mama sweaters. Those are just great. They do go on sale and are reasonable. I got a lot of borrowed stuff and hand me downs.
