My doctor diagnosed me with PCOS today... I am not sure how to feel about this. It seems like a blanket diagnosis with no hard data back up. I am going for some blood work but he said that it's not always conclusive. I have looked up and read everything online that I can stand to read tonight. Just wondering how many other women out there have this diagnosis and how/what you are doing to treat it. My doctor is putting me on provera to induce my cycle and then clomid days 5-10 to induce ovulation (since we are TTC). He basically said to me that the only way they offer to "treat" or control is is birth control pills. I am not a big fan of this "treatment"... To me that isn't addressing the REAL problem but I'm not sure if there is a way to address it. I was thinking of trying the diet and exercise approach first and foremost. I know I am overweight... But I don't know that my diet is THAT horrible nowadays. Since I had my daughter I have been eating more fruits and veggies than ever, but I definitely haven't exercised as much as I use to. So I'm hoping to try that route first. Just looking around to see if any other gals have PCOS and have had a more concrete diagnosis and/or how you are treating it. Thanks so much!
Re: XP: PCOS, anyone?
See my OB didn't even mention Metformin and glucose testing and I keep seeing it talked about at great lengths online for treatment. Hmm
I have PCOS and it basically is a blanket diagnoses. Testing is done to rule out everything else and in the end if everything is negative you're diagnosed with PCOS.
There are two ways to treat PCOS. Birth control or fertility drugs. No two ways about it. If you don't ovulate and are TTC, nothing can be done to reverse the effects of PCOS without being on fertility drugs. If you're insulin resistant, your doctor may try putting you on metformin to regulate the insulin and that may possibly bring you to ovulate on your own, but it certainly doesn't happen for everyone. There isn't a real problem to address. The only thing that can be done at this point is treat the symptoms.
PCOSers don't generally do well with carbs (which fruits have a lot of) so go easy on the fruits and try to incorporate whole grains in your diet (whole wheat bread, whole wheat pasta, and brown rice) and you'll probably succeed at losing some weight. And exercise is good too. Take your daughter on a walk every night to get your heart rate up.
PCOS affects 10% of all women, so you aren't alone. Because it is a syndrome, no two women are alike in their symptoms or treatments. Personally, I have choosen to never use bcp to treat pcos (all it does is mask the symptoms, not help them). Currently I am only taking Metformin and PNV (I am done with treatments for now).
Check out the PCOSbio for lots of info as well.

Hi, I was just diagnosed with PCOS too. Righ now just as you I am looking to find out more about it. So far, from not much experience I can tell you that my RE asked me to do South Beach diet to keep the carb intake under control. Apparently that is a huge factor with PCOS. It's not about how good or bad you are eating as much as it is about the glycemic factor. You may want to read up on that if interested (South Beach diet.com is a good source to start with). Other than that I am still waiting to hear what my treatment will be so can't really add much more. Someone on here recommended Soulcysters as a good info source for this condition as well.
GL!
