Re: dumb question...

  • Hi there. Betas are a blood test that test for the quantity of HcG in early pregnancy. Women who have experienced losses or infertility issues will have 2-5 betas in early pregnancy. Typically you won't have a beta if you got pregnant without issues. Your doctor will probably do a pee test in the office. Maybe a qualitative blood test.

Miscarriages can really happen at anytime. The risk drops significantly after the first trimester (13 weeks).  Bleeding does not always accompany a m/c. Just the same, bleeding doesn't always mean m/c.

Only you can decide when is the right time to tell. Some  people tell right way, some wait to hear the heartbeat, others not until they are out of the 1st tri. Good luck to you!

  • Betas are usually only done for ladies who have had previous miscarriage, or if there are early concerns such as bleeding. After you get past week 12 the risk of miscarriage goes down significantly. Not all women have bleeding to indicate miscarriage. It's possible for the baby to stop growing and you wouldn't know it until it is detected on an ultrasound.
