How much would you pay for childcare?

Here is some background on my situation:

I'm a certified 7-12 English teacher and I've recently been laid off from my job.  I can't find any teaching jobs so I've been looking to take on nanny or babysitting jobs that I might continue once I have my baby because I'd like to be a SAHM. Before I taught highschool, I worked in a daycare so I have experience with young children.

So far, I've been asking $8-10/hr as a childcare fee.  However, I see a lot of ppl offering childcare as low as $25/day, even providing snacks.  This blows my mind! How can a provider offer service at such a low price? How would they profit at all?? And I know it's difficult to afford childcare but it doesn't seem like a great thing to cheap out on. Or am I being unreasonable/asking too much?

What would you be willing to pay for childcare or expect a provider to ask for?

Re: How much would you pay for childcare?

  • In-home care costs about $5/hr around these parts (SD - much cheaper than NY) unless you hire for a one-on-one situation in which I'd have to pay like $10/hr.

The childcare facility we are looking at is $4.15/hr with a minimum of paying for 25 hours/week.

I'm guessing this doesn't really help you as our areas are so different - but if you take 4 kids, $40/hr is a lot... you can probably get by with less?

  • In-home daycare $45/day is the cheapest around here. Personal one-on-one babysitter - $10 - $18 / hour, it varies greatly.

A daycare facility is about $350/week here!

Nannies in my area charge about $10-15/hour to come to your house - with our work hours, that would probably equate to anywhere from $80-150/day.

Licensed in-home daycare (that take multiple children) tends to run about $250-300/week ($50-60/day), from what I've seen so far.

Yup. Lady Juliet and I live in the same area. Reading the costs in other parts of the country makes me think about moving! An in home nanny (thinking of sharing 1 day of someone else's 4 day a week nanny) is $18 and hour.

  • This is totally going to depend on where you live.  Even in Atlanta, our childcare prices vary GREATLY from one part of town to another.  Our current daycare center charges $186 a week for the infant room.  So that's about $37 a day.  Relatively cheap for Atlanta.  I know if we were to use a center closer to our home we would probably be paying more like $250 a week or $50 a day.  In home is usually going to be a lot less.  In fact, my grandmother kept kids up until last year and never charged enough IMO.  I think at one point she was keeping twins for $100 a week!  But then again, she didn't do it for the money.  She loved it and it kept her active so she was happy to help out some local families that might have been struggling.  You never know- there are actually still some decent people out there!

  • MrsTechie posted a study on national daycare costs last week.  It was long but had a lot of really good information.  The price will completely depend on your area.  Where I am, in Southern California, the average is about $300 a week for full-time daycare faciltiy care and about $150 for full-time in-home care.

This is the 2009 NY average cost from the link that MrsTechie shared:

    Appendix 1

2009 Average Annual Cost of Full-Time Care by State

    New York

    Child Care Center

    Infant 13,676

    4-year-old 10,847

    School-Age 10,400

    Family Child Care

    Infant 10,187

    4-year-old 9,474

    School-Age 9,240

    Hope this helps Smile

  • I am in the western wealthy suburbs of Chicago and several of my friends are nannies.

They usually go to the house of the people the work for and make $10-$12 per hour for one kid, and $2-$3 per additional kid.

It's a usually a little less if they drop off at your home.

  • I'm on the other side of NY, so I'm not sure how different things are here. I have a friend who does in-home childcare and she charges $125/week. She gives discounts for families with 2 or more kids.

I don't know much about the Syracuse area, but you need to keep in mind too what the average family's income is and how much they would be able to afford while still paying other bills. If I was looking into childcare, I certainly wouldn't pay the same amount for in-home as I would for a certified day care facility.

Think about how much you would be willing to spend on in-home childcare and start there as a guideline.

  • Ok, thanks for the responses ladies!~

In my area, it's pretty much this as well.

I'm kind of jealous that a lot of you laides only have to pay 125 a week for day care!!!!  I'm offering family members $50 a day to watch my LO when I return to work and I was thinking even that was too little to pay.  But I guess not depending on where you live.

  • Like PP said, I think it varies highly based on area.  In my area, it is common to pay at least $12/hour and more often $15-$20/hour (depending on experience) for a nanny.  Honestly though I would be more likely to pay more to someone with nannying experience than to someone with teacher certification/a college degree. I don't think the skillset for caring for an infant has much to do with higher education.

  • Daycare around here is $2400/month for a newborn. A private nanny is a bit more. At home daycare is probably a bit less.

  • Here in Vancouver I pay $1316/month for my 22 month old which works out to roughly $65/day.  Everything is expensive out here but for me the cost was never an issue because this is one of the best centers here!

That being said, today is his last day at that daycare since we have decided to move him closer to home (his current daycare is downtown).  His new place is only 4 blocks from home and will cost $1125/month or about $56/day.

Both daycares provide morning/afternoon snacks and diaper wipes.
