  • Here's a copy. it's just about lenses. I need some help, because I am totally lost!

?Hey.. you're into photography right? I hope I'm not totally off-base here. I have an older Canon 300D, but I can't upgrade right now. I do want to get a good lens though, and I have forgotten every bit of info I learned from photo classes. Do I just need a boring old zoom like this

Or am I completely wrong? I want it for portraits and such, but I don't wanna spend tooo much. DH would kill me if I asked for too much :)?

  • LOL! I'll look in the batcave in a bit and get right back to you. Oooooo. I wonder what it is!
  • I, personally, prefer the 55-250. The other lens is more for sports and nature type photography where you need the lens to have more of a zoom to it. BUT now that I look at the price, I would totally get the 75-300. That is an awesome price and it may give you more depth you want for pics when your little one starts playing sports or you want to take an upclose pic of him from across the room. SOOOO Jealous! I have a Nikon and the 300 lens for it was almost $700 :( Boo.

  • And I should add, the only reason I prefer the 55-200 is bc without it I would have a gap. I have a 18-55, a 55-300 and a 70-300. I need that 55-70 block for portraits.
  • I totally thought it was going to cost more than that! That's what kind of threw me off. This camera is an old 6.3 or 6.5MP, but we paid a good bit for it back then. This was part of a student loan :)

So you think I'd be good with the cheaper one, or would you go ahead and spend the extra $100 for the other one? DH is already talking about pee-wee football, lol, so I know it'll be used for sports later on as well as just the normal baby pic stuff. ?

  • The one we have right now is an 18-55, if that matters.?

  • I would get the 75-300 lens. Esp if you have the 18-55.  You won't miss that 55-75 block if you aren't doing professional work. And that price is amazing for that lens! I am in shock! That is awesome.

And I shoot with a 6 megapixel camera and have blown things up to poster size at Wolf Camera and you can't tell any difference. With SLR's you can't tell a difference between 6mp and 10 mp unless you really know what you are looking for.

  • That makes me feel better then about my old camera :) Thank you sooo much. I'll have to get you a Christmas present or cookies or something!?

  • Not a problem. I was about to put down about $300 more for a 10 mp SLR when the guy at Wolf showed me there really is no difference unless you get out a huge magnifying glass and look up close. It saved me tons! But yea, i would totally get the 75-300!
