I've been trying to stock up my fridge with healthy foods, but the things I want to eat aren't the best foods that I could/should be eating.
I'm picky when it comes to fruit and veggies, so I try and only buy the ones I like, but I still feel like my fruit/veggie consumption doesn't match up to my bagel/hot dog/cupcake consumption.
Is anybody else struggling with this? I want my baby to get everything he or she needs.
Re: Trying to stay nutritional..
I'm struggling with this too. I hate going out to the store that's out of the way for me but that's where I get my produce. I know I'm not eating enough fruits but hope that my prenatal is helping atleast a little bit. The last few days I have been loving salt and vinegar chips and had some every day. Eek. At my last doctor appt I had lost a few lbs though but now I'm afraid I'm going to gain. I know I need to gain some but don't want it to be from eating unhealthy chips! Well hope you find some more healthy things to up your fruit and veggie intake. You could always try fruit/veggie juice maybe? GL!
Fruit & veggie juices are good, but it's really not a replacement for the real thing.
Try different combos, maybe? I hardly ever eat apples by themselves, but LOVE them if I can dip it in peanut butter. Fruit smoothies are a great idea, and I've been eating more dried fruit as well (so portable!). I try to put veggies into our regular meals - like adding spinach or broccoli to pasta sauces/toppings instead of having to force myself to eat it by itself. I'm always happier if I sprinkle a bit of parmesan cheese on broccoli, zucchini, etc. I love avocados on fajitas or on top of burgers as well, and they're loaded with really GOOD fat that's great for baby. And who doesn't like guac? Ok, I'm sure there are people, but still!!! Load up nachos with veggies. The other day we put pureed butternut squash in our mac & cheese. I loved it (DS sadly isn't a fan of mac n' cheese... *sigh*). I guess my point is I find it easier if I can add vegetables to dishes or add toppings (relatively healthy ones) to give them a bit more kick.
Good luck - I struggle a bit with feeling like I'm eating enough & a good variety of veggies & fruits.
Ha. I totally feel for you. But here is the weird thing. I hate fruit. I have never ever liked it and I still do not. People think I'm crazy but it's true (and hubby hates it too). We are veggie freaks but no fruit.
It's been a struggle b/c I know the baby needs a variety. I have forced myself to eat a variety of berries, pineapple, cantalope, bananas....I eat them quick and then eat toast or I try to do a smoothie but I hate the texture. LOL. I tried fruit juice (which I also hate) and that fusion -and I thought it was awful-but if u at all like fruit, I bet you would think it was ok.
V8 is a good idea. I never even though of that. I have been making smoothies because it seems like a great way to get the variety of fruit with a good taste. I have been having a thing for nacho chips and salsa. Maybe I will try to make some homemade salsa without all the preservatives.
I had a tortilla craze a couple months ago. I've had an aversion to chicken since I found out I was pregnant, and I usually love chicken!
Thanks for all the great ideas everyone:)
if i were you.... i would do your best to eat healthy and smart and get the nutrition that that baby needs but it is also smart to give the baby a little of what LO wants.
i started this pregnancy out a bit heavier and i am doing my best to eat smart and healthy for LO. i am almost 25 weeks and im only at 7 pounds gained...... but sometimes, i just cant get over my cravings. and i have also been told that what you are craving is what the baby wants so give LO what LO wants. hehe
make it a healthy balance and you will be just fine!!! good luck!!
