Hot Yoga

I haven't been to a gym in 3 years and I love taking classes...so this morning I finally got my mom to babysit because my bf begged me to go to a class with her.  I jog everyday and do pilates or some other type of strength training 3-4 days a week... but I have never tried yoga before.  Well it turns out the class was "hot yoga"  it was amazing... i took it really easy, drank tons of water and felt more amazing than ever when I was done... but when I got home to do some research on it I got freaked out because everything I read said it is dangerous and can cause harm to the fetus because your core body temp gets too high!!  Now i am really freaked out, I'm going to ask my doctor next week... has anyone else done hot yoga or know anything about it????  btw... i am just past 6 weeks along...

Re: Hot Yoga

  • I'm sure you and baby are fine but I would avoid hot yoga while pregnant. But I hate hot yoga anyway--your vinyasas should get you warmed up for stretching, not space heaters.

As a side, I would always tell any instructor I was pregnant before doing their class.

  • It's probably fine since you were well hydrated and didn't feel overheated, but I would avoid it from now on. I LOVE hot yoga but gave it up for the extent of my pregnancy. Talk to your doctor about it, but there are plenty of women who get pregnant in hot countries and are fine, so don't lose sleep over it.

In 8 or so months you can head back to drop the baby weight!

  • thanks ladies... you really helped me feel a little better....  I am definitely going to wait until after the baby comes before I head to anymore hot yoga classes!!
  • Yes, by all means go back AFTER the baby.  You can do what you normally did before the pregnancy.  I know several women who have done Bikram (thats what I do) and they have had healthy normal babies (2 women w/in the last month).  But they've been doing it for years.  Also an alternative is doing the bikram pregnancy video at home without the heat.  I do this at home sometimes when I can't make it to class.
  • I practice Bikram yoga and at my studio, you can participate after your first trimester (which seems to be a common thread everywhere...even my dentist won't see people in their first trimester!)  I have talked to many of the pg women and they say the practice made a big difference during their labor and delivery.  I would talk to your doctor about it.
