Babies: 3 - 6 Months

Witching Hours

DS is 13 weeks old and from the hours of 7pm-9pm he is like a different baby.  He is so fussy and nothing really soothes him except for the 20 min bath we give him.  Ive been told babies grow out of the "witching hours" by 3 months and have been anxiously awaiting the time when I have a happy baby between the hours of 7-9.  Anyone else deal with this?  How long will it last?  Any coping techniques- Im soooo sick of it!

Re: Witching Hours

  • This is what happens to my DD as well.  And pretty much the same time too.  She starts witching about 7pm and we give her a bath at 8:30pm and down by 9pm.  We bounce, sing, give her a paci....nothing really seems to help.  I hope she grows out of that soon, but I don't think she will.

This.  During the day DS is only up for 1.5 hours and then goes down for a nap and its like that all the way up to his dinner time bottle. I put him down for a nap at 5:30 and normally he doesn't sleep more than an hour so he'll be up any time now and then won't go to bed till 9...so rather than only 1.5 hours of awake time he is up for 2-2.5 hours since he refuses to take a night time nap so therefore he gets very cranky and so we have to walk around the house with him and keep him entertained or he'll throw a fit.  Every once in a great while I can get him to fall asleep for a little while..no more than 1/2 hour between 7-9 but its a rare ocassion.  So I don't picture this phase ending anytime soon until he changes up his schedule

  • Keegan is rarely up past 8:00/8:30. Last night we were at a family party and he was very cranky not only b/c we were off our normal schedule but he was also up later than normal. He goes down anywhere from 7:00-7:30. He gets really cranky if he goes down any later. Maybe you need to mover your bedtime to earlier. I know if I kept Keegan up as late as 9:00 we would be in the same boat as you. I would suggest starting your routine earlier. Good luck!!

  • My DS was colic.  For the first few months of his life he cried from 7:30-9:00 every single night.  It stopped at 4 months because that is when I nipped the whole thing in the bud and started putting him to bed at 7:00.

You might be missing your baby's natural cue that he is ready for bed. From everything I've read, the one thing all experts can agree on is that very young babies do better with an early bedtime.

  • im afraid if I put him to bed too early then he will wake up in the middle of the night to eat.  If he eats at 8:30, is asleep by 9 he can usually STTN.  If I change this, wont he wake up?  Also, can I put a screaming baby to bed??  How do I know if this is colic?
