Minnesota Babies

Moving to Mpls...have some questions

My husband and I are planning on moving to Minneapolis early next year.  My SIL/BIL live in Maple Grove so we hope to be in that general area too.

My main question is...how much do you pay for daycare?  I told DH that it will be quite a bit more expensive than Omaha and he doesn't think so.  An average in home is about $130-150 a week and a center is about $190-210 per week here.  We have an incredible arrangement and only pay $100 per week right now!  I'm guessing we're looking at over $200 anywhere we go, right? I'm just looking to get an estimate so we know what to expect financially.

Thanks ladies!  I'll be back with a TON of questions once we finalize the move :)

Re: Moving to Mpls...have some questions

  • I live in Woodbury (a suburb of St. Paul, which is in the SE corner of metro, opposite of where Maple Grove is) and in home day care for infants can be about $200 per week.  At least that is what my friend charges for her in home day care.

  • Yes, it will likely be more expensive. I'm in the west metro and in-home infant care is $180-230 per week, a center is $270-330 per week. It gets cheaper as they get older. Also depends on your specific area. And hour+ west of the Cities is $110-160 per week for an infant at an in-home daycare.
  •

    PPs are right.

I live right in St Paul  -over by Como. The cheapest I have seen (without meeting any of them) is about $180-$220 and the centers are running $250-$330 a week.

  • Exactly what everyone else said.  You should expect to pay almost twice as much for a licensed center as you would for a licensed home daycare.

Also, I know things are different for each state.  In Minnesota, you might find cheaper in-home daycares because they aren't licensed.  That's not legal in Minnesota.  Anyone watching more than one family needs to be licensed by the state of Minnesota, so watch out for that.

Price does depend on the area you live in.  Some suburbs are cheaper, some are more expensive.  Further out than that, it's cheaper.

  • If you're looking for a center in the City of Minneapolis proper, I don't remember finding anything for less than about $280 for an infant per week (and certainly many that were substantially higher).  That's not to say they don't exist, but it would be unusual.  Good luck - I was overwhelmed but eventually we decided that since these people would be spending more waking time with our child than we will, it's important that we're totally happy and comfortable with them.

  • We felt most comfortable with a center rather than in-home (although we toured and interviewed both types). Our first center was in Chanhassen at $320 a week with food NOT included. Our new center in Minneapolis was $315 for infants with food included.

  • There is a fab center in Maple Grove (they also have 2 other locations: Blaine & Champlin) & for 3 days it is $250 for an infant for 5 days. They also do breaksdowns for 4/3/2/& 1 days if you don't need a full week.

  • Depending on the suburb you're looking for care in (either near where you live or near your work) center based care runs around $300/wk for infants full time.

  • I have quotes for in home daycare in my suburb for $160-180/week.

  • The cheapest day care that I was comfortable with was $150 (in-home). The center that I'm going to is $280/week. These are infant rates, so they're a bit higher than a toddler.

  • We are in a center in Maple Grove and toddler rates are $960 a month.  That is middle of the road for center rates in the area.

  • I moved the the twin cities from Omaha in 2008 and was shocked at the price difference, but we chose to live 30 mins west of Minnetonka and the average for in home daycare is $120. But the time and money you spent to drive that far may not be worth it.
