Rib cage pain :-(

Just wondering if anyone else is experiencing any pain in their ribs. I have had stabbing pain in my right ribs for the last couple of days. It's been off and on this weekend, so I am going to call the doctor first thing tomorrow morning. It seems to be worse when I sit down and I generally don't feel much when I am standing. There is no way it can be the baby at this point and it freaks me out a little.

Re: Rib cage pain :-(

  • I just laughed and told my husband, "look the first post I see is "rib cage pain"" because I just googled it!  Mine has only gotten progressively worse in the past three weeks.  Sad  At this point, it hurts to sit for more than a few minutes.  I told my doctor (who is due the week after me!) and she giggled at me!  She basically told me to take a tylanol and suck it up.  I, literally, feel your pain.   Apparently, ice packs, sitting really straight with a lumbar pillow with your arms over your head is supposed to help... FYI: A heating pad makes mine worse.

  • Is a very sharp stabbing like pain?? This happened to me yesterday and it was so bad that if it continued for any longer I was going to the ER but then it went away just as suddenly as it started. FREAKED ME OUT.
  • i have had rib pains on my left side for awhile and I always feel like my ribs are bruised but I have figured out that it is my baby's feet under my ribs and her pushing on my ribs. The only thing I do is just lay flat and put my hand up over my head to try to stretch my abdomen
  • I have had rib pain in the past few weeks and I am pretty sure it is the baby.  I can feel her moving right below my ribs and I know she is transverse so I am pretty sure it is her little head rest beneath my ribs making me very uncomfortable.

Yes! It was a sharp pain. Now it is just kind of sore. I was freaked out because it was a sharp pain. Glad to know it's not just me. Smile

  • I had pain under my ribs a lot when I was pregnant with DD and then it didn't go away after she was born.  It turns out that my gall bladder was full of gallstones so I had it removed.  I haven't had any pain since!  If the pain gets worse after eating a fatty meal or cheese it may be gallstones.  It also just might be the baby, so check with your doc.

  • *Most* of our ribs are hurting because of Relaxin. The ribs connect to the sternum(breastbone) with cartilage. Relaxin affects all cartilage in the body not just the pieces/parts in the pelvis.

  • yep same here.  the pain can increase when i sit versus stretch my right arm over my head and lay on my left side.  depends on the bra i wear. i typically just massage my ribs on the right side in every way imaginable and it helps, pain goes away.  but yea it is all the time, typically 2-3 times a day.
  • Yes, I've had rib pain the last week or two. I've found that it sometimes helps to lean back slightly and sometimes sit with a pillow behind my lower back (which helps the back pain too!). I figured it was just all the "stuff" getting pushed up higher because baby is getting bigger down there. Not sure if that's what it is or not, but it can be quite painful and uncomfortable. :(

  • Thanks ladies! I called the doctor and the nurse thinks it's just the baby pressing up into my rib cage. Especially since the pain is primarily when I sit down. They said to follow-up if I have any blurred vision or headaches. I wouldn't be surprised if it was the little one. I felt a pretty good punch just a couple of inches below the spot just a few minutes ago. This is the highest I have felt any movement up until now!
