Pregnant after IF

did you give up soy (veggie burgers, tofu, etc.) when TTC?

hi, all.

I'm a vegetarian, so I typically eat more soy than the average person. I keep reading that soy is not great for TTC because it mimics estrogen.

I've cut way down (the occasional veggie burger, soy sauce sometimes), but I'm wondering whether I should go cold turkey. (so to speak!)

any advice? thanks.

  • Yes, I gave up soy completely (except for some soy sauce occasionally). Do you eat dairy and eggs? Those and beans are a great source of protein.

This. I'm not a vegetarian, but I don't eat a ton of meat. I really only have soy once in a while now that I am pregnant.

But during my IUI and IVF cycles I didn't even realize I should watch it. I didn't eat a ton, but I ate some. (Maybe I had some sort of soy product once a week.)

    Good luck :)

  • Just for variety's sake... I did NOT give up or cut back on soy at all while TTC, going through IVF or now that I'm expecting.   I wouldn't say that I eat a "ton" of soy, but definitely a decent amount.  ie - soy milk on my cereal every morning (I don't like cow milk), I love love love my edamame.  My docs - at all stages - didn't have a problem with it, but we were MFI, so maybe that's why?

All of that said, I'm all for doing EVERYTHING you can, as long as it can't hurt it might help, right?

  • Everything in moderation.  The studies implicating soy in poor pregnancy outcomes or infertility are in rats.  The rats were given the equivalent per body weight of lbs and lbs of tofu and soy every meal, for every day. I have yet to encounter anyone who eats enough soy to mimic that.

Soy is in virtually every processed or semi-processed food, but in small amounts.  I would focus on eating a balanced healthy diet with many sources of protein, vitamins, carbs and fiber, rather than cutting out one thing in particular.

  • I eat a ton of soy!  Soy milk, tofu etc.  I did cut back a bit while ttc but couldn't cut it out because it's my main source of protein.  I think as other pp said, in moderation it's fine.

  • thanks, ladies, for your input. I believe in the whole moderation thing. I just tend to drive myself nuts. (you know how you start to question everything you do during TTC, especially when IF is involved!)
