ROFL! I bought one of those round egg rings from Amazon SEVEN months ago. You know the ones that make the egg look like the ones from McDonalds McMuffins? I haven't touched them once. They looked cool though.

I was looking at the silicone pancake rings, LOL!! Damn f-ing Amazon!
Is this a thing? Like scrapbooking? I've never heard of it before.
I've only heard of it on the nest. it's big on the nest (parenting and preschooler boards are where I've read it) .. thanks to some blog that's floating out there.
dc will deal with regular sandwiches. I think what they do w/ the bento meals is cute... I just don't have the time. maybe a once in a while cut the sandwich in a cute shape... but frankly , ds eats all of his sandwich, crusts included. don't want to skimp him. lol.
I actually think it is like an extension of "Everything in your kid's lunch box should be from some sustainable, organic place or you are a terrible parent" thing that you see in a lot of wealthier schools.
Not that it can't be a lot of fun, but I have heard that it gets extremely competitive.
Wow, some of that stuff is amazing. There is an incredible Asian grocery/market in Seattle that I bet would have a ton of this stuff. Must consider field trip soon...
Here I thought I was going to be cool with my dinasaur shaped sandwich cutter I got from the dollar bin at Jo Ann's......we have no Bento here....DS was fixated on the Star Wars lunchbox. Do you think they have sandwich cutters in the shape of Jaba? (haha!)

You are in luck! Williams-Sonoma has Star Wars stuff! This (bento box lunches) and the crazy kids birthday parties are likely trends I will not be participating in!
Brightning is the shiit. I love seeing her stuff. She and Joseysbride from Parenting never cease to amaze me. Now, that said, my child is content with her ham sandwich cut into squares & crust removed in her pink sandwich container with a heart on it. Lol.
I've seen her posts on the pre-school board - amazingly creative! I've also seen posts on the muffin tin movement. The idea is to make lunches as attractive as possible so the kids will actually eat it.
I just don't have the time or the inclination. But I'm amazed by those who do!
she does some very creative stuff - but honestly - it seems a bit extreme to me... esp that she takes so many pics and posts constantly about it.... I hope she's just doing it b/c she and her daughter love it- and that she doesn't feel like she NEEDS to do that kind of stuff and be the best - to impress anyone.
I have no desire to do that kind of ***. I'd rather spend my time playing with my kids... I'm sure she has her daughter involved in the stuff ----- let her have a couple more kids and see if she's so into doing that
my older son is on the meal plan at daycare- i LOVE it. I can't wait until the twins are 2y/o and can get on it, too!
I just picture my kids showing up with such fancy lunches at school - all the other kids constantly being jealous - and end up hating the child for having such nice things nobody else has..... I remember back in the day that was how it went in school with the few kids who had everything.

That's cool, I'm sure her kid loves it, but here is where my mind immediately went:
1) This woman needs a job. (Maybe she has one, if she does, then she is one of the most amazingly efficient women on the planet.)
2) What happens when Little Suzy has lunch over at her friend Jane's house, and Jane only has regular PB&J cut in triangles? Maybe her child is really flexible, but if I did something like that, it would only make my child insist on always having his sandwiches shaped like Star Wars, etc. As it is, he will only eat cream cheese on bread that's shaped in a circle because one time he had those Sandwich Thins.
brightning- is a SAHM- personally- her posts always help me with extra ideas (and spawns new ones) to keep my DD interested in eating/trying new things. just makes it a little easier to keep them interested in trying new things when it is creative. honestly- to me the whole 'bento' thing is just another version of the 'Monday muffin tin' lunches. Just mixes it up a bit- keeps it creative.
My dd is just as happy having her sandwich cut with a cookie cutter shape- but she is younger.

I've never heard of "Monday muffin tin." I love creativity--it's all cool what she did--but I personally am not into that kind of thing for lunch. My DS does not really like "mixing it up." He's pretty OCD about that kind of thing.

all good- different strokes for different folks. Muffin tin monday saved my sanity during a 'picky' stage with DD which thankfully didn't last long.
Oh My...I just use a circle cookie cutter every now and then and tell DS it is a Moon Sandwich...LOL.
Luckily DS will eat anything and is not a picky eater at all. So I won't judge if thats what you need to do to get them to eat...but if I had to resort to that I don't think I would have the time so DS would be hungry first LOL.
We use bento boxes for DD's lunches and I actually think they save a lot of time, not to mention disposable packaging. I pull out whatever lunch stuff we have around that week, fill up a bento - done. Granted, often that includes a peanut butter sandwich with the crust cut off. I don't have time (or creativity) to get as elaborate as some moms. But I would hope the other 2 year olds aren't hating on DD for having a box with compartments.
Re: Way to feel inadequate about my kid's school lunches!
If I can get something cut in to reasonably uniform pieces I am happy! My sister uses those soy sauce things, though. She loves them for my nephew.
I want my kids to be happy if they open their bag and have a cookie...a single, sad, little, plain, boring, circle-shaped cookie...........!
OK, I can't stop looking at those pics. What do you do with all the stuff? Help me!
I feel money flying out of my wallet and wasted on someone like me with no patience and little crafty ability!
I want these from Amazon. They are egg molds for Bento Boxes! And my kids don't even EAT EGGS!!!!
Question: How popular are bento boxes for kid's lunches these days?
I think back in my school days, little girls with bento boxes would have gotten the side eye and been considered kind of prissy.
Am I totally old school on this and woefully out of touch? Are they a must-have for the adequately geared-up school child?
