School-Aged Children

what age did/will your child ride the school bus?

we have another year prior to kindergarten, but it's something I'm worried about.  dd goes to a private prek this year that starts at 9. kinder in public school starts earlier and I may not make it home in time to get her to school (I work nights, usually get home between 8 and 8:15)... we live in a big city and have just one car. I take the car b/c the hospital is in a hit or miss area and I cannot get to it by train, gotta take the bus.  a friend drove her dd the first week, then put her dd on the bus to go to school starting in kindie.  I'm just not sure I'm okay with it yet, esp given we're in a big city.  I'm debating on finding a full time job and buying a 2nd car... but I only work 2 nights a week now. so it wouldn't be a big problem except for one or two mornings a week. I'm not sure if we can do the bus parttime (my schedule varies some week to week).  ??? right now we're in walking distance (1/2-3/4 mile) to our zoned school... but we're looking to move.

when did/will your dc start riding the bus , if at all?

  • Not until middle school unless we move first.

I have to admit, I'm kind of glad my kindergartener isn't on the bus with 5th graders...

I think they start using public transit at middle school age here... (6th grade)???  I think. it's that or 9th.  but they are not on the same bus with the P.S. students either way.

Not that Im a huge fan of it but there will be days where L has to ride it this year.  He will be starting Kindy tomorrow.  We will take him most of the time but with my work schedule and dh school schedule there will be times that is the only way he will be able to make it to school in the morning.  I will be able to pick him up daily.

With that said he rode a bus for preschool (private bus for only preschool kids) He loved it and now cant ride the big bus.

The big bus will have kids all the way up to high school on it.  :(  They do however make the younger kids sit in the very front and put a few rows between the older kids.  There is a bus monitor as well so Im not too worried about it.  He will only be on it for about 20mins each way.

  • DD rode the bus home in 2nd grade and that was okay.

  • He started this year (1st grade, almost 7) mainly b/c my house is the bus stop!

  • My kids ride the bus and the oldest has since K (5 years old).  My middle is so excited to be able to ride the bus this year-she's starting K.  She doesn't want me to drive her the first day-she's that excited about taking the bus.

  • When my oldest son was 3 yo he started going to the Early Childhood School for Speech and other special needs.  It's within the ISD and funded through the state like other public schools.  We only had one car at the time and the only way he could get to and from school was by bus.  He rode the school bus every day and LOVED it.  And when my middle son started going to the same school when he turned 3 he too rode the bus.  We now have a second car, had to since we had another baby.  Riding the bus was a great experience for my kids.  They don't ride it anymore and they miss it.

  • SD#2 and SD#3 rode the bus since K and are used to it (now in 5th and 6th grade). SD#1 and SS had a SAHM that drove them for elem. school. Now SD#1 (9th grade) hates riding the bus. It has been an on going issue. It doesn't help that her mom said things like "see how much I love you to take you to school instead of riding the bus." Now she is paying for it since she is working again and can't always take her.

It is scary to let the younger kids do it but if it is how you need your family to function due to schedules let them ride the bus. If you have the ability to drive them please don't make it seem better then riding the bus b/c with life changes they may have to one day.

  • We live in a big city too and Iwe are having the same concerns.

School starts at 8:35am so I will be driving DS( 4.5yrs old) to Kindergarten in the morning and then he will have to take the school bus home at noon.  It is a small kindergarten only bus, which drops the kids off right at the front door.

  • Where we're at the kindergarteners have their own bus, the driver has a list of children and who can pick them up from the bus stop, he know them by name. I'm okay with it. We only live .07 miles from the school, but because they are in kinder and would have to travel a major road to walk they get a bus. Next year we'll have to walk or be dropped off though.
  • I feel that kindergarten is too early for little ones to take the bus (my opinion), my daughter didn't start taking it until just last year (2nd grade) and that is only because her home daycare provider puts the children on and takes them off the bus daily. The stop is right in front of her house which makes me feel more comfortable.
  • DD is 5 & going to go on the bus in two weeks for the 1st time

  • Annalise will be riding the bus to 4K this year. She'll be taking it from her daycare with the other 4 year olds to the school and then back to the daycare after school. One of the teachers at daycare is always there to put the kids on the bus and take them off. At 4K, the kids have color coded bands put on their backpacks that indicate which bus they will be taking or if they will be picked up by parents. The teachers there have a procedure to make sure all the kids get to the right place. I think Annalise is more excited about riding the bus than any other part of school.

  • DS will ride it this year.  At his school they have 4th grade buddies on every bus.  It's their job to get their KGers to class ok and back on the bus ok after school.  Apparently, they take this job very seriously.  =)  On the first day they have parent volunteers greet that KGers as they get off the bus where they give them name tags, assign their buddies and get them off to class.  I guess we'll try it and see how it goes, but it sounds like they have a good system in place.
