RP: Not sure what to do...

This is our schedule during the week while I am at work (all bottle expressed milk.)

5am bf

1 bottle 6.75oz

2 bottle 7 oz

3 bottle 6.5 oz

5:30-6 bf (sometimes he just plays or wants to suck)

7:30 bf (bath, bed) sttn

My Mil feed him at 8am bottle 1 and then an hour later gave him 2.5oz of bottle two.  DH works from home & Mil are trying to tell me that he is not getting enough and need more during the day.  I'm having a hard time believing this. This seems to be a constant battle in our household.  DH is also pushing to start solids; personally I don't want to start until 6mo.  I have done the calculations on kelly mom and if anything he's overfeed.  He is teething and they are telling me nothing else is working (teething tabs, orajel, etc.). The weekends I feed on demand and never have more than 8 feedings.

Any suggestions or advise? I'm at my wits end and it is stressing me out which in turn is counter productive!

Re: RP: Not sure what to do...

  • I always lie and blame it on the Dr.  That's what I do wtih my mom when she won't listen to me.  I have to make up a story I spoke with the Dr on the phone and she said "blah blah blah".

  • I would say he is getting enough, too.  I mean, he's getting almost 28 oz in bottles alone.  You don't really want to go over 32 oz/ a day, and surely he is getting the 4 ozs in the 2 BFing sessions.

Teething time is rough - so, I would just chalk it up to that.  he is probably wanting to "eat" just so he can suck and sooth his mouth.  Does he use a paci?  Or is there another teething toy you could try?  During teething, I usually just have to rock them to sleep.  Make sure you are giving Tylonel or Motrin for the pain, too.

  • I think he's getting plenty.  Up until 6 months I sent a total of 18 each day for Cooper.  I would nurse 3 times (morning, after work and before bed) with that.  At 6 months old I upped his bottles to 24oz during the day.

We started solids (for dinner time only) at 4.5 months, but it was a decision based on C being hungry.

I think you need to talk to your DH first and get his support before you try to tell both him and his mom what to do (even if you are right).  You'll be fighting an uphill battle if you try to tackle both of them at the same time.

  • Cooper still doesn't drink that much milk at daycare.  He nurses during the night though so his milk is spread over all 24 hours.

  • I am also one who will blame it on the doctor (I didn't have this same issue but did use this excuse for other parents who were up in my bidness...)

Another thing you can do is print out some pages from kellymom or other sites that support your claims and give them to MIL, saying they are handouts from your doctor...

  • I agree it sounds like he's getting plenty as well.  Maybe a greater number of smaller bottles would placate everyone?

  • Thank you all!! I may try the 4-5oz bottles since it seems to be eating to comfort the pain.  He takes a paci and has reflux, but that seems to be in control now that he's older.  The only reason they gave the 2.5oz an hour later is because nothing else worked. I had DH on board with waiting until 6 mo, for solids, but his mom who is old fashioned and didn't bf has been in his ear so the poor guy is the middle man.

I try explaining that lo is satisfied on the weekends or anytime I'm around, so it can't him needing more otherwise he'd be waking at night or cluster feeding in the evening. Right?  This is more a sanity check for myself, because I have two people that don't understand bf.

I think I will print some info out and give to MIL.  I sent DH the links (not that he'll read them) and honestly think he's just tired of being pulled two different directions.

  • Our babies are the same age and A) I will not feed her solids until 6 months per what I have read and my pedi's suggestion and B) your baby is taking more than mine. When she takes a bottle she takes 5 oz TOPS - usually more like 4 oz. I put 6 oz in each bottle and can count on my hand the number of times she took all 6...each time resulted in spitting up too which she rarely does.

Now that I'm home she just nurses all day but even when I leave bottles for MIL or DH, she doesn't take more than 5 oz and our pedi isn't concerned either. I nurse 6-8 times a day depending on her mood. Typically, she nurses 7 times a day.

Stick to your guns. You're baby is thriving and growing so tell them to back off. I had to do the same to MIL - all her babies were formula fed so to her if a baby doesn't take 8 oz at each feeding then they must be starving. She doesn't say anything anymore since I made it clear that our pedi says she is FINE.

  • Thanks everyone!  Dh read the posts and all the information I had from kelly mom and he agrees smaller bottles will work better.  Today is our first day trying them so wish us luck.  We are still not starting solids until 6 months.

It truly is great to have such an awesome network of other moms thanks again!!
