Stay at Home Moms

We are idiots.

I wrote last night of ds refusing to go to sleep and general freaking out until I sat in his room until he fell asleep.  Well....we had switched his nightlight to a bit dimmer one because the original was really bright.  Tonight I tried to get bedtime going and he started freaking out again.  I switched back to the first one we had used and he laid right down, and is now peacefully asleep.  I had no clue he was afraid of the dark!

If you child is/was, when did it start?  I feel SO mean now knowing that it would have only taken the other nightlight to fix it.  That idea didn't even pop in my head last night.

Re: We are idiots.

  • Glad you figured it out and he is sleeping better tonight. Don't beat yourself up...sometimes it is trial and error and the simple things we overlook.

We have always had a nightlight in DD's room but it is not very bright. About 2 months ago she started freaking out when we put her to bed at night. She started asking for her closet light to be on. Now we turn her closet light on with the door cracked as well as her nightlight. I usually turn the closet light out when I go to bed. We didn't change her nightlight so I am not sure what changed for her.

We keep soft nightlights in the hall bathroom but not one in DD's room. She hasn't shown any signs of being afraid of the dark. However, she does freak out in the car if we are in it at night...she has a night light in her room at my parents house so I prob. should put one in her room here. That may help with her 3 am freak outs lately, now that I think about it. I kept thinking teeth...

  • My boys each started being afraid of the dark at about 2 1/2. My oldest grew out of it at about 5, and youngest isn't as afraid as oldest, but he sleeps with a reading light on to go to sleep.
