NE1 here w/a hubby laidoff?

So DH was laid off in January. He has had many great interviews, only to lose out to an internal candidate or local candidate (if applying out of our area)

I am going to look for a pt job this week. I have been out of corporate for 5 years now. I am freaking out as we are running out of time here. He received a year severance, but after the taxes we are near the end of that. He wants to still be able to focus on looking for jobs etc so I need to work nights/weekends. I don't even know what minimum wage is. .... .I don't know why I am even posting...just venting my freakout I guess. I have a 4 and 1 yr old.....sh*t

I'm sorry you're going through this. Definitely look at places like Target, Starbucks, etc. It's usually pretty easy to hire into someplace like that, even with no recent work experience. And they are open late so you should be able to pull closing shifts.

Do you have savings you can live off of or has that been exhausted already?

If you have a CostCo by you, try them. My friend got paid well for flippin hot dogs.

My husband was, luckily we had a good amount saved for an emergency in case something like that happened and it was only for a few months and he was able to mow lawns on the side to bring in a little extra money. Look into places like Starbucks or Trader Joe's if you want health insurance (that was what I was told since I am pregnant and that was a concern). Also, there are non conventional ways to make money, even if it is a little bit. DH cleaned out the basement and garage and took the stuff to the scrap yard for money. He also found free cabinets and other metal things on craigslist and got that and took it to the scrapyard for some money.

I went back to work part time 2 years ago (worked for only 10 months) until we sold our house. I worked for a bank. Banks are always looking for part time help and the hours are reasonable, plus you get paid holidays off.

Lots of places are starting to beef up staff for the holidays. Try anywhere retail for more night and weekend hours. Even a grocery store. It may not be "glamorous", but a discount on groceries would help!

Just a thought you might want to check out the restaurant industry if it is busy by where you live. Waiting tables brings home a lot of money and very flexible hours so you can be home during the day. GL

I was laid off when I was 7 months pregnant Sept 09. Then 2 months later - 10 days before my due date (and the day my DD came) my husband was laid off..on his birthday at that. It has been hard, but we know GOD has a plan and it will all work out.

He goes on interviews, but nothing. He has since then got his real estate license and will be entering this new career next month.

We went through this right after Thanksgiving. It is a long and complicated back story but essentially we had lived overseas while DH was working on his MA and then PhD and after 3 years decided to take a year off and move home. He was just looking for something temporary since we knew we would only be here a year. He worked for 7 weeks before they gave him 24 HOURS notice that he (along with 10 other people) didn't need to show up on Monday.

We had savings to get us through for a little while but one job after another fell through. In January we decided that maybe I would have better luck finding something PT since I had both corporate and hourly (retail and sales) experience. I called my old manager at Ann Taylor (I worked there in college) and she gave me a job on the spot. After 2 months I was promoted into management and made $11 an hour. Not enough to live off of but it supplemented our savings enough to keep us comfortable until DH got a new job in May. Although he is working FT I decided to keep my Ann Taylor job with about 10 hours a week to pay off some medical bills that weren't covered by insurance. I worked night and weekends so DD just stayed with DH. It wasn't ideal but it was necessary and I am so grateful that I had a way to make ends meet.

Sorry for the book! I don't know what is in your area but I know the majority of Ann Taylor and AT Loft stores are hiring right now and if you are going to work retail they are one of the best companies to work for. They are flexible with your schedule and the money is better than minimum wage. Good luck!

Just saw this and wanted to clarify. I wasn't the store manager - they actually make really good money as do the co-managers (salary not hourly). I was on the management team - there were 3 of us and we had keys, could open, close the store and make certain decisions but were still considered part-time and answered to the store and co-managers. Basically a step up in responsibility from a sales associate but certainly not the store manager! $11 is not bad for a PT retail position especially in a relatively lower cost of living area (we are in metro Atlanta).
