Gestational Diabetes Screening - Ques

Hi Ladies,

I have my gestational diabetes screening appt this week and was wondering whether I need to do anything special beforehand (ie drink a lot of liquids, not eat etc.)

I don't think my doc's office gave any instructions, but will call Monday if there's a doubt.

And could any of you please tell me what to expect? Thanks.

  • Everyone has been told different things. Some doctors prefer you fast before the test while others don't.

I know mine is on Friday and my OB said for me not to eat anything past midnight. The only thing I'm allowed is water.

This. Mine told me to go ahead and eat, just nothing too sugary.

  • For a 1 hr, my doc says to eat normally. They give us the drink beforehand, and we just have to make sure we arrive at the lab so they can draw blood at 1 hr exactly.

I had GD last time- doing a 3 hr soon... they told me to fast 12 hr beforehand and only drink water for that one.

  • I would recommend not eating if your appt is in the morning. For my last pregnancy, I was told it was fine to eat so I had a bowl of non-sugary cereal (Crispix or something) then failed my test because apparently the Crispix was too sugary- WTF.  So then I had to reschedule the test for another day and do it all over again. That time I didn't eat anything beforehand and passed with flying colors.  In order to be sure there is no confusion about what is/is not too sugary I would just not eat beforehand.  I have mine on Tuesday this week and won't be eating anything :)

     Good Luck!

  • if they didn't want you to eat anything they'd have made sure you know it.  my doctor gave me a sheet of instructions and it basically said to eat normally, but to avoid pop tarts, syrup, and anything particularly sugary that morning.

  • I think it depends on your doc. Mine gave me a bottle of the sugary drink to bring home and drink an hour before the appointment. She recommended fasting after midnight to lessen the chance of a false positive. We'll see how it goes in a few weeks!
