Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Q for those who stopped breastfeeding at 12 months...

I'm nursing DS 4 times a day now and plan to drop one feeding a week starting, I guess, with the naptime feedings (?)  But what's wierd is he's more interested in the 5 a.m., 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. feedings than the before bed feeding!  Tonight he didn't eat much dinner and only nursed for a couple minutes and when I tried to force him to nurse longer he bit me harder than he's ever bitten!  Ok, lesson learned, I'm sitting here with an ice pack on my nipple. Crying  But I don't want him waking up hungry in the middle of the night!  So my question is, is it normal to drop the bedtime nursing first instead of last?  He nurses for 20 minutes early in the morning when my supply is up so I'm wondering if he's losing interest as the day goes on and my supply drops?  Did everyone else drop the daytime feedings first, then the morning, then bedtime, or does the order really matter?

  • We stopped BF around 15 months. We stopped the daytime feedings first, then night, and lastly morning. I always thought night would be last but it was really easy to drop.

  • I would drop the feeding that he is less interested in. You can try to replace it with a bottle. Then 2 feedings with a bottle, then 3 then all.

  • We also dropped the morning feeding last - DD was just like yours - most interested in the morning, and less interested as the day went on. I started weaning at 12 months and she was fully weaned by 14 months. By 13 months, she was having a pretty good dinner of solid food, so I think she just wasn't hungry any more. In the morning, she nursed right after she woke, and then had a small breakfast about a hour later. When we fully weaned, I just put her in her high chair and gave her breakfast right away. She didn't protest too much (although I made sure her first few breakfasts were full of her favorite foods so she wouldn't fuss for her milk).
  • We dropped daytime, then last one at night, then the morning session. He was biting and not paying attention at night so that one was less important to him. He loved nursing 1st thing in the morning.

  • We dropped the night time feeding first. Belle still nurses twice a day usually when she first wakes up (IF I am not working nights). and then early evening some time before supper. She doesnt take a bottle, but will drink sips in a sippy cup through out the day. We are trying to wean her off these two feeds cuz we want to start trying for another one, but she doesn't seem to be ready to give it up. even though we have been down to just two feeds since she was around 10 months in preparation for me going back to work. She doesnt seem to care if she doesnt get the 5am feed if I am not home cuz of work, but for some reason she senses me there and wont go without it if I am there. I just need to figure out how to get rid of these last two feeds and we will be golden!

I dont really think that the order matters, as long as you are giving something in place of it. We give plenty of snacks (usually fruit, cheese, yogurts) during the day along with her big meals and that seems to sustain her enough to let her sleep the night 8pm-5am (wish it was a little later, but I guess we cant complain). Good luck!

  • I still BF DD in the morning and at night but am going to cut those out over the next few weeks. I dropped her before nap feedings first and next I will cut the before bed feeding. We will cut the morning one last which is the opposite of what I thought I would do but she eats a big dinner and doesn't really nurse much before bed, so I think it will be easier than I had anticipated.
