Re: BUMBO seats

  • There is some controversy about whether or not they help or hurt.  Some people think they cause problems with the spine but others believe they are great and even use them for therapy with babies and children with poor muscle tone (like those with cerebral palsy and things like that).

Basically, do the research and make the decision that you are comfortable with.

We love our Bumbo seat.  We have this little activity table that DS likes to play with when he is in the Bumbo which kind of adds an entertainment aspect to the seat.  I think, like with anything baby related (jumpers, exersaucers, etc.), as long as you aren't sticking them in it for hours a day then your baby is going to be fine.

  • The award winning Bumbo Baby Seat is cleverly designed to support baby in comfort, allowing them to sit up independently. Made from a single piece of latex-free, low-density and lightweight foam, the Bumbo Seat provides a snug and comfortable environment for baby to sit up for feedings, play time or quality time with the family. The Bumbo Baby Seat requires no straps or fasteners to hold babies in place, and helps them transition into sitting. It also makes the perfect baby shower gift!

either you c&ped that or you are secretly a Bumbo rep ;)

Personally, I'm not a fan. We have one. Its alright, but we don't really use it. We practice sitting on the floor instead. I got it as a gift so it wasn't like I wasted money on it. But many people swear by it.

  • Mine was a hand me down so I don't feel bad not using it.

I've only used it for pictures.  LO prefers the floor to anything like a bumbo or excersaucer

  • It's GREAT for photos.  We got ours at a consignment store and use it for no more than 5 minutes at a time.  She's not really 'getting' sitting yet, I don't want to confuse her by putting her in an unnatural sitting position (babies learn to sit in 'frog leg' position - Bumbo prevents them from getting into this position). So we limit it.

If you get one never put it on a high surface even well attended as babies can launch themselves in one direction and tip it.

  • We use ours for a few minutes everyday. He can't really sit up on his own yet (reliably) and I put him in it if we're eating or I have to go to the bathroom or something. It keeps him from falling over and bonking his head on the floor. We also use it for feedings since we have yet to decide on a high chair. It comes in handy at times.
  • DD's and escape artist. She pulls her leg up and turns to the side to try and get out. We only used it just a few times. Thank God it was a gift. See pic below.

But I'm a physical therapist and I can say that I use it in therapy sometimes, but only when I want to give the child a new sense of the world (sitting up). I personally don't think it's bad in moderation.

  • We like ours, and I agree with a PP: as long as you're not sticking LO in it for hours every day, it's fine.

We feed LO in it, and that's about it. He's probably in it for a total of 30 minutes per day.

Also, YankeeBaby... Your LO has tiny legs! Our LO is such a giant. I have to squish his legs into his Bumbo. :-)

  • We love ours.  Allows her to sit up and see EVERYTHING!  Looking at the ceiling can get lame after awhile.
