Anyone worried their car is not safe enough?

Hi ladies. DH and I have a small single cab single cab pick up truck (not good for baby) and a 2005 Kia Rio (pretty small.) Is anyone worried that their car is not a good "family car?" DH and I are thinking of getting a car that is safer, even it is not in our budget or financial plan until next year. What is everyone else doing about cars?

Re: Anyone worried their car is not safe enough?

  • We have a Chevy Impala and a Dodge Neon. One day, I dream of having a mini van, but for now, the cars we have will do.

Your Kia may be small, but that's probably your best bet for your "family car". If it was me, and it wasn't in my budget, I wouldn't be getting another car. You don't want to strap yourself, especially with a newborn baby.

  • We just purchased a Honda Odyssey because I wanted a car with more safety features.  We stayed within our budget and I really love it.  If I were you I would stick to the Kia until next year when you can afford a new car

  • Actually I feel very safe in both mine and dh's cars. I have a VW Jetta, dh has a Subareu (sp?), both have like a hundred air bags plus other safety features. The problem is I think they're too small for both of us plus a car seat in back. Dh is 6 ft 6 in tall and reclines the front seat so he's practically in the back seat to make room for his legs. It's going to be a tight squeeze, I'm getting a car seat that's safe but not as bulky as some of the other ones, and we're just going to have to make it work for now. I'll have my car payed off in 2 months, so I'm going to use car payment money for baby stuff for a few months and then start looking for a bigger ride next year. Like PP, I would stick with your Kia for now and try to keep baby out of the truck. That doesn't sound safe at all. We just have to make sacrifices for our LO and do the best we can for now. I try to see these kinda things as motivation to work hard and save up for the best situations for our babies.

Not a good idea.  If you can't afford it, then why would you even entertain the idea?  What you have will work just fine as long as it has 4 wheels and is reliable to get from Point A to Point B.

  • I bought my escape knowing that we would eventally have a family...however I didnt expect someone to hit us.  Since then I have wanted a new car, but everytime we get ahead without budget and can afford to trade my car in something happens that we have to funnel that money elsewere...I am hoping to still trade it in however I am not sure thats going to happen this late in the game.... so when we come home we will be coming home in my hubbys Ram truck since it is a 4 door... I just hope i can get in it. and hopefully we will be able to get a new escape that has not been in an accident...
  • Thanks ladies. That is what I was thinking. We will stick with the Kia for now and save up for a better "family car."

  • I think that 5 years ago, I would be nervous with a Kia Rio, and would totally want an SUV for my baby's safety. Now, though, the cars on the road are getting smaller and smaller, which makes small cars safer (because there is a much smaller chance of getting hit by a large car).
  • I think a 2005 car, even if small, is going to be reasonably safe.  Most important is to get a good carseat and make sure you have it installed properly.

I agree that you should probably wait and see how you feel financially once your LO is here before buying a new car.
