any tattoo lovers out there?? opinions please

im a big tattoo lover and DH is also. i definitely want to get something to honor LO after she is born but i cant decide what to get. i was hoping for some opinions and ideas.

i was thinking her footprint. i'd really like to get it on my ribs (thought it would be cute since she kicks me there lol) but i'm honestly terrified of getting my ribs tattooed. i've heard its the worst place. i have back, hips, wrists, inner arm, foot and ankle already - so i'm low on other places that i'm willing to get it. i thought about getting it on my other foot but do you think a footprint tattoo will look silly on a foot? lol. seems weird to me.

she will be here in november and the flower for november is the mum, so i could always do something like that. i don't know where. i don't think i would want to get that on my foot because i already have a big flower on my other foot. 2010 is the year of the tiger but i'm really not feeling that lol.

anyone else have any thoughts?

  • I think the footprint on your ribcage would be adorable!  I'm with ya though, I'm also terrified of getting one on my ribcage, but my husband has tattoos on both sides of his ribs and he says it wasn't horrible.  He said it was probably his most painful out of all of them, but I think if we can go through childbirth we can probably stand that tattoo, right?  :)  Good Luck!

  • i think that idea is sreally cute too!  what about your stomach instead of your ribs?  the stomach isn't too painful.
  • the foot on the rib cage is cute - it has a cute story behind it!  I also agree when you say a foot on a foot would look a little off.  So I'm for the rib cage.

  • i was thinking the same thing! it cant be worse than childbirth right! although this is my first so i have no idea what to expect from childbirth! ha. my foot took 3 hours and that was painful and my inner arm took 3 hours and that was painful too. my tattoo artist told me that if i thought those hurt i wouldn't be able to handle my ribs lol.
  • I am a huge tattoo lover!!!! I have seven myself and am not anywhere close to being done. I love the idea of getting footrprints, which was actually thinking about doing myself. Then I thought what if I have another child then am I going to put his/her footprints on me as well? So I decided not to get footprints and am also still looking for ideas for a tattoo, I would say do something that you can add on to or something versatile. I will let you know if I think of any ideas!
  • I like the Mums also. I though about some, I googled and saved some pics I liked

  • i like the footprint on your ribcage... you have to think that the pain will only last a little while and then you will have that pain-free adorable tattoo forever ; ) .... i have some tribal-style wings that i drew myself on my back and i think i might think of a creative way to put his name in there somewhere : ) i have no idea though... it will be over a year until i can do that thanks to breastfeeding (i hope) so ill have plenty of time to think of it

I'd guess the ribs would feel a lot like the spine, which was not pleasant to have done, but not unbearable either. You could always ask an artist to help you design something that incorporates both the footprint and the mum, that could be cute. I do like the idea of the ribs better than the foot, but you should google pictures of tattoos of footprints on feet to see for yourself. Some look ok to me, and others look pretty bad, I think it has to do with the placement.

  • I don't know if you plan to have additional children, but if you do, you should think of something you can add to so it'll be fair to all your kids.

The other thing is instead of getting something random and not necessarily connected to the child (like a mum) when he's born, you can wait a bit and see what his personality is like and get something that is really meaningful to who he is as a person.

  • I have 10. I have one on my foot and my super long last name on my ribs... I would get the other side of my ribcage done before I'd ever get another on my foot.

  • I'm going to go against the grain here and say the footprint thing is overdone and tacky.  Sorry, that's my opinion.  I also hate the idea of it on your rib cage (and yes, it will hurt, a lot...but if you've had your foot done it's likely comparable).

The flower on the other hand could be very tasteful and cute.

  • I have a pumpkin for DD1 on my ankle [born 10-26] and for DD2 [due 10-18] I will probably get her birth flower [marigold] on my ribcage or upper back.

  • I have a rib tattoo that starts just about where my bra strap is all the way down a couple of inches below my hip bone.  It was pretty miserable, not gonna lie.  The outline is the worst part.  I also have my foot tattooed and that was awful, but it only took a few minutes as opposed to the 2+ hours (with no break) of rib tattooing.  If I were you, I would avoid the foot and just do the ribs.  It's really worth it.  I think with good placement, rib tattoos are beautiful.  I personally like the mum idea over the footprint idea.  I have seen many footprint tattoos and it seems a little played out to me.

I saw a tattoo a woman got of a revolver that had flowers coming out of the barrel.  Each flower represented each of her kids and the gun was her representation of her protection over her kids.  Cute idea!

  • Basic rule of thumb is the closer to bone (tailbone, top of the foot, ribs) will be a little more painful compared to a fleshy part like your arm or leg. I have 3, I personally don't think they "hurt" its more of an annoyance that can actually feel kind of cool. Its not an unbearable feeling. Plus once you have your LO, the feeling of a tattoo will be nothing..

I think the footprint on your ribs would be a really cute tattoo Smile

  • I plan on getting LO's footprint on top of my foot.  :)  I think it's a cute way so that DH and I can put our feet next together and see LO's footprints right next to each other.

This. Also I have both of my feet and my rib tattooed and both are bad spots but the rib is worse because it takes so much longer. I had two sittings with my rib piece, the outline was done before I got pg with DD and wasn't horrible, but it definitely hurt. I got pg with DD unexpectedly so couldn't get it colored in until after she was born. I got it colored in when she was about 2 months old and it hurt A LOT. I think the crazy hormones made it worse. I found it to be more painful the lower it went towards my hip. Mine starts a little above my bra strap and goes down to my hipbone.

I like the idea of waiting to see what goes with your LO's personality. I like the PP who has the pumpkins for her October babies - totally cute!

DH and I are waiting until we 're done having kids so we can get kid pieces that incorporate all of them.

  • I think the idea of a beautiful, big, colorful spider mum on your shoulder would be nice! Way better than the footprint, which I too think is tacky and overdone.

  • Hubby and I are both heavily tattooed (I have 3/4 sleeves, plus tattoos on my neck, back, chest, and both thighs).

The tattoo on my right arm was a tribute to motherhood, after I had my son.  It's of a woman holding a dying peacock, surrounded by jasmine flowers.  The peacock symbolizes pride.  To me, becoming a mother meant dying to my own pride and living for another person.  At the same time, it means trying to balance this with holding on to a sense of self and youthful femininity (hence the jasmine flowers - which is my name).  It's subtle and pretty. :)

I think I may get another baby tattoo at some point though. My husband and I have matching tattoos on the side of our necks of an anchor - symbolizing being rooted in our marriage and being each other's strength (we were also married in a navy town so the sea theme fit well).  I may get something on the other side for my kids with more of a sky theme (stars, clouds, birds, or something along those lines) with their initials - my kids represent all my dreams for the future and the sky is the limit.  So my husband keeps me rooted to the ground, my kids keep my head in the clouds.

Anyway, I guess I prefer tattoos that are more symbolic than literal. :)

  • Okay... take my stuff with a grain of salt because I am really not a fan of tats at all.  I typically find them very tacky unless there is major genuine meaning, great placement, and an awesome artist.  The little dolphins and flowers people get on their ankles because they are "pretty" always make me cringe.

    That being said...

My DH and I have discussed possibly doing small matching tattoos to commemorate our children and lost children (two miscarriages) once we are for sure done having kids (I want one design that covers all the bases - not several tattoos).

I personally am not a fan of the baby feet.  It is a little overdone (like dolphins, butterflies, pink hawaiian flowers, etc Smile ).  they are also REALLY large IMO.  The ribs are a decent place - my sister has a very interesting and meaningful tattoo on her ribcage.  It is her only tattoo and while she said it was painful she survived and is happy with it.  I personally like it because it isn't a place that shows in clothing or formal-wear and isn't a "tramp stamp".

What I think we are going to do is have an artist design a monogram that incorporates the first initial of our children.  Eg: this artist does that: https://www.piergustafson.com/pages/monograms1.html

He turns monograms into trees, birds, etc.  You pay him for his time designing it.  Chances are, the design will cost as much as the tat itself.  But for me, if it is going to be on my body for eternity I want it to be PERFECT - so I am okay with higher cost on the outset.  So we will have something created based on the first initial of each of our children's names and somehow creatively incorporate our other babies (not sure how yet - but it will be subtle and probably only something we notice - like leaves on the end of a branch or something like that).

I have no tattoos (and neither does DH) so we will put them wherever we want.  Mine will go somewhere that isn't seen in work or formal clothes (no ankles, back, arms, wrists, etc).  And obviously this is if we even decide to do it...

    Good luck!!

  • Foot on the ribcage has my vote!

I have a part of my ribs tatted, it actually tickled more than anything...then again, I'm quite ticklish to begin with. But I think after labor pain, a tattoo will be a breeze. Even if it were on your eyeballs :)

  • thanks for all the ideas and opinions ladies!
  • Yes the ribs hurt! A LOT! I only got my first outline I couldnt even get the second outline or have it shaded in! That was 3 years ago.

I heard this one hurts as well however, I dont know which one hurts more.

Getting your babies footprints on the bottom of your feet. I think it would look unique kind of like its your foot print.
