Diet Coke with Splenda?

Ok, so I haven't had any soda since I found out I was pregnant. Yesterday at the grocery store, I picked up a case of Diet Coke with Splenda thinking I made a pretty good choice-since it is not sweetened with aspartame like other diets...  My husband came home and got pretty upset that I would even think about drinking soda and I explained to him the splenda thing and how it is better than the other...  blah blah blah.  He is so afraid our baby is going to have a learning disability or something silly because I am drinking soda.  After all, I only plan on drinking one a day-MAX....  I am kind of getting tired of being watched by everyone around me and being told what choices to make....uuurrggg....  It is nice that they are looking out for me and the baby, but I CAN make my own decisions.

Please share your opinions on my choice to drink this..... and if you guys discourage it then I won't do it ;)

Re: Diet Coke with Splenda?

  • I like to have my daily soda, and that hasn't changed!

I only drink one can/serving a day. I figure there are a lot worse things that I could do? With a toddler and being pregnant, I need all the help I can get!!!

  • I just read this article a few days ago:  https://articles.latimes.com/2010/aug/18/news/la-heb-diet-soda-pregnancy-20100818

I hate diet stuff, so regular pepsi it is for me but thought this would be important to pass on.

  • I try not to drink soda while pregnant (I usually drink diet anyways) but I understand the need to have it once in a while, I'm pretty addicted.  I drank crystal light a lot with my daughter and she's pretty dang smart.  But I think fake sugars are still in question as to wether they are safe or not.

As for being sick of people telling you what to eat, not to eat, etc.  It's going to happen the WHOLE pregnancy and will only get worse once you start showing because strangers somehow think a pregnant belly gives them the go ahead to say whatever they want to you.  And it will continue to happen once you have the baby too.

  • I don't drink that much soda, but every now and again I will have a diet coke.  I heard that you should avoid splenda when you're pregnant.  But, I don't know if there is any truth in that statement or not.
  • FDA says splenda is okay for pregnant women.  Personally, I drink regular soda.

  • Splenda is actually fine.  I try to limit artificial sweeteners but I did that before I got pregnant.  I actually read the other day that they're all fine, with the exception of saccharin (and even that caution is not because of birth defects).

  • My gyno said diet coke was fine, I think.  Just no caffeine.

  • As I sit here drinking my daily cup of coffee (which is the only thing that helps me go #2 these days), I say go for it. People in Europe drink alcohol during their pregnancy, people in Asia eat raw fish during pregnancy, etc...and there are no studies that I have found that show the incidence of birth defects is higher in other areas of the world than the US. Everything in moderation, don't go overboard, and generally make the healthiest choices you can (if you can stomach them). If all you can drink is Tang without puking, go for it. If you want your daily soda, have one. Everyone will throw their opinions at you during pregnancy- just research on your own and make the best decisions you can. It sounds like you are doing absolutely fine, hopefully your husband will start to agree with you soon.

  • I took all of the artificial sweetners out of my diet months ago and had less bloating and headaches. I've only known I'm pregnant for 2 days, but I'm limiting my caffeine to one pop a day, and drinking regular pop with real sugar.  I also use Stevia (brand name pure via or true via) in place of artifical sweetner as it is calorie free but from a plant.  The crystal light Pure Fitness is made with Steevia! try it!

I'd just try to think about it as if my child were born.  Would I give my kid alcohol? No.  Would I let someone smoke around them? No.  Would I let my kid drink 5 cans of pop a day? No. (I know these pop doesn't equal alcohol!)   Feed the baby now the way you would when he/she gets here.  Focused mainly on nutrition, and a few treats along the way!

  • Splenda is fine.  I had GD during my 1st pregnancy and was told that I could have splenda.  It's other artificial sweeteners such as aspartame that you should stay away from.

  • My dr. recommend limiting artificial sweeteners to one-per-day if I must have them, but said Splenda is fine (though she still recommends limiting that), so I think you are totally fine.

  • The splenda is fine, but limit your caffeine if you can.

  • Diet coke with splenda is fine. Regular diet coke in moderation is fine too. Tell your husband to calm down.
  • Splenda makes me a bit nervous because I'm worried that one day they will say that it isn't good for you.  I drank caffeine free regular Pepsi now and then when I was pregnant with my first.
