Opinions - Please be nice!

I'm Greek & Scottish ... hubby is Italian & Dutch.  I don't really prefer our baby's name to be either of those origins, however, I found a name that is Greek and has a nice meaning (I'm all about meanings!)

And there's actually an ironic story to go with it.

Ok, so the name is Dori ... or you can spell it Dory.  In Greek it means "Gift of God"

The ironic part of this story is this:  I'm a member of a forum with a bunch of other women who had similar difficulties trying to conceive.  One woman went through IVF and only ended up having one good egg to put back.  For some good vibes and motivation, she changed her avatar to Nemo.  Ya know, because in the movie Nemo is the last surviving egg left after his mother & siblings get eaten by that crazy fish??  Long story short, she's now almost 20 weeks pregnant!!  That one little egg was all she needed.

Anyways, thinking that changing my avatar might bring myself some good luck, I changed mine to Dory (yes, from Finding Nemo)  My reasoning behind it was to always remember "Just keep swimming" and not give up my fight to become a mother.  Another interesting part of this story is that the night before I found out I was pregnant, I for some odd reason popped in that movie and fell asleep watching it.

Coincidence?  I don't know.  But I just thought it was amazing!  Everyone who knew of my struggle always joked, "Well now you need to name your kid Dory if it's a girl."  I would kind of nod and smile while thinking "Yeah ok"

However, now that I actually know what the name means, I can't help but like it!  Call me crazy, but it almost seems fitting!

What do you all think?  Thanks Smile

  • While normally it wouldn't be something I would "pick out" I think that is so beautiful! Maybe it's hormones getting the best of me, but that brought tears to my eyes! I'm not even familiar with Finding Nemo!

I think Dory is a very cute name and it has a beautiful meaning, and significance to you.

  • I adore it. I think it's so symbolic and will be a wonderful story for your daughter as she gets older.

  • Beautiful story - go with it!

  • While I don't think its a bad name and the story is really nice, she will be known as "Dorky" by the mean girls in elementary school.  Its a very easy name to make fun of.  Some people don't worry about that aspect of naming a child, but I try to keep it in mind.  I would go with the Dori spelling.
I give up trying to get a ticker.  I have a DD that is 2.5 years old and is awesome.  Maybe I'll add a quote to distinguish myself.  Hmmm.  How about...

  • I know a girl named Dori.  She's one of the sweetest people I've ever met.  I definitely prefer the version that ends in "i", though.
  • I actually really like it even without the meaning and story behind it but with all of that to go with the name I think it sounds perfect! It's a very sweet name!
  • It's a very nice story and the name is nice, but I'm not particularly a fan of the name. What about something like Dorianna and then call her Dori for short. I'm not even sure if Dorianna is a name, but the idea of using Dori as a nickname is cute.
  • I know a really sweet Dori. I love the story and I think the name is great. Good luck!
  • I really like it!

This. I don't know if I'm a huge fan of it on it's own (although I LOVE the meaning for you), but I love the idea of giving her that name as a nickname.

  • I think it is a very cute name! However, I do like pp idea of it as a nickname because she may want something less "cute" when she's older. Either way, I would go with some variation. I love the story!

I thought the same thing, Dori as a nickname.  I did some searching and found that Dorina (pronounced dor-EE-nah) also means "Gift from God"  Kind of cute, highly doubt my husband will like it!! lol

I totally agree. I think it's perfect for you. I do prefer the spelling with an "I" and not "Y" though. But the name sounds like it's spot on.

  • You could always use Doreen and Dori as a nickname. I like the other ideas that were mentioned above as well, but I had a cousin Doreen so I thoght I'd mention it as a possibility.

  • I'm partial to Dora, Dori's more traditional sister but Dori is cute and the meaning it has for you enriches the beauty of the name - I'm sure a thousandfold for you.
