Toddlers: 24 Months+

Have you brought your 2 yo to the movies?

Lilah has recently started enjoying watching movies at home.  (Cinderella, The Little Mermaid, and The Aristocats are in constant rotation!)  I thought it would be fun to take her to see a movie on a big screen, since she sits so nicely at home to watch them, but I don't know if the atmosphere would be too distracting.  I'm thinking maybe Toy Story 3, in a matinee.  Please share your thoughts/experiences!
I don't know what's up with my siggy and I am too lazy to figure it out.

Re: Have you brought your 2 yo to the movies?

  • DS just turned 2 this week, but during the summer we went to the free family movies at Regal just to test it out. The first time he made it about a half hour before he decided the steps with the lights were more fun. The second time he had to go potty right when the movie started and didn't want to go back in.

  • My DD will be 2 in a week and we haven't brought her to the movies yet. She loves Shrek but will only sit through maybe 40 minutes of it and then wanders off somewhere. So for us it would be a total waste of money.
  • Yes! We have taken DD#1 to Princess and the Frog, How to Train a Drgon and Toy Story 3! She is normally a very hyper active child but has a good attention span. Now she did stand up for portions of the movies and had 3 potty breaks per movie but it was fine!
My 2 girls, both born on a Friday the 13th, are exactly 2 years, 2 months, 2 hours and 2 minutes apart! And Baby Boy joined us October 11, 2013! image

  • I feel like I'm breaking out in hives just thinking about taking DS to a movie. Yikes.

  • I usually dont have a hard time taking Aurora to the movies. As long as she has a drink and some popcorn to snack on she was on she is good to go.

Ha! Me too. He doesn't even typically watch movies at home. He watches a lot of shows (30 minutes long) but not full-length movies.

I'm thinking I might try it soon though. It might be a fun one-on-one date while DH stays home with DS2 (or vice versa).

    this!

  • We took DS 2 to see Toy Story 3 when it first came out.  He did very well and loved it!  He was 21 months when we took him.

  • Took DS (24 months) to Toy Story 3, early p.m. show (right after nap).  There was only one other little girl there with her grandma, which was nice.  DS stood for a bit and switched chairs on either side of me a couple times but that was fine.  He was enthralled with the movie and being able to get up and move around a bit was perfect.  He also ate his weight in popcorn.  Fun times;)
  • I took DS to see Toy Story 3 in June. He LOVED it and made it through the whole thing. Take lots of snacks.:)

  • My DH and I took DS to see Toy Story 3 a few weeks ago and he did pretty well. We went to a late morning show during the week, so the theater was practically empty. We also had lots of snacks, which helped a bunch. DS was great for the first 2/3 of the movie and only wanted to wander for the last third, which was also partly because it was getting close to naptime. I had to stand in the aisle and hold him for the last 15 minutes or so, but we made it through with no tantrums and without having the leave the theater at all. DS isn't usually one for watching entire movies at home yet, either, but the big screen at the theater, the darkness and the snacks kept him interested.

  • My 2 yo DS has been about 5 times. We even had his 2 yr B-day party at the theater the weekend TS3 came out. He LOVES it! He is also really good. We plan to take him to see the new movie Alpha and Omega when it comes out b/c he goes nuts when he sees the preview on TV. It has always gone really well. He loves to sit in his own seat with a kid's tray of popcorn and a little juice. We have a few rules going into it though, to make things easier for everyone involved :)

We try to go to matinees, especially during the week, just because it's easier if there's not a packed theater and he does decide to start acting up a little. We also stay in our seat or sit on Mommy or Daddy's lap. No running around. If he starts to get antsy we take a little walk out in the lobby and stop for a little talk (reminder of the rules for how we behave in theaters, or else we can't come back) It also really helps if we sit in the lower part of the seats. I have found that the best place to sit  is in the top row of seats on the second tier of seats (below the walkway area) and at the end of the row, if possible. It's easy to get in and out without distracting people and my DS isn't distracted by everything going on down below if we sit up at the top. (Tried that the first time, it didn't go so well. He could see everyone in the seats below and in front of us and also all the pretty lights on the stairs ) THe more I take him, the better he does.

  • Yes.  My DD has been to see Babies (the documentary), Toy Story 3 and Kung Fu Panda.  She has made it through all 3 movies without any issue.  I think it just depends on your LO's temperament.  Definitely bring snacks!
  • We took dd to see Toy story 3 3d and she loved it!  Sat through the entire show!!  You should take her!
  • we didn't take Griffin until he was 3y/o.  We didn't want to push doing something that he probably wasn't ready for..... life goes fast - no need to do "firsts" when they really are too young. At 3 he did great - and loved it.
