Now what?
I know it's been discussed before, but I need ideas for lunch and dinner (and since DH comes home late, I may end up making Aaron something separate since he's hungry earlier).
Tonight he refused to be fed. He wouldn't eat the stage 3 meal (could have just hated the taste) or the pudding he usually loves. He fed himself Polly O string cheese and most of a nectarine. Then he took a 4 oz bottle of whole milk.
This week he's eaten pasta, roasted chicken and mashed potatoes. And Cheerios, Pepperidge Farm goldfish, Puffs and Pretzels. Plus a bit of my chocolate chip cookie (bad mommy). He even took the spoon and fed himself some yogurt.
I'm so glad he's wanting to do this... but now what? lol
Re: Finally showing interest in self feeding
When Maddie refused to be fed, I would sometimes give her the smallest spoon to feed herself and I would feed her at the same time with a bigger spoon. She didn't mind letting me feed her, she got to help and I knew she actually got a decent amount of dinner.
Maddie also likes hamburger patties, scrambled eggs (if your Dr is OK with it), tuna, battered fish patties and chicken. She loves fruit. I quarter grapes and peel apples and oranges for her.
I mix rice with meat and she really likes that. GL. I am looking forward to hear what everyone else says. I need ideas also!
This. Adrian is suddenly very picky and won't eat as much as he used to. I read that it's normal b/c their rate of growth slows down now and they don't need as many calories. Still, I worry that he's not getting enough to eat and have to get creative! When he tries to grab my spoon I'll give him another spoon to play with and "feed" himself with. And these are the things that he likes to eat at the moment, although things change weekly so it's always hit and miss with him:
Cheerios, italian white bread, pieces of pasta, stage 3 gerber chicken noodle and turkey with rice and vegetables dinners, pieces of banana, deli smoked turkey, cheddar cheese cubes, american cheese, Gerber apple wheel snacks, those veggie Gerber snacks, mum mums, pieces of beef brisket (when we go out to eat), green beans, cooked beans, pancakes, ice cream, scrambled eggs with cheese, other stuff I can't remember.
Basically he tries everything but has some favorites. It really depends on his mood but I try to spoon-feed him at least half a jar each of a stage 3 dinner and fruit because when he self feeds most of it ends up on the floor and I'm not sure he eats enough.
Yay Aaron! H went through this...actually he still is not a fan of being fed. :-)
I have tried everything that has been suggested above but here are a few more thoughts:
Pierogies (sp?) - H LOVED this
Mac N Cheese mixed with either broccoli or tuna (that I just came up with and havent tried)
waffles, pancakes (blueberry is his favorite..hmmm need to make some this morning), french toast
ravioli (spinich, squash, etc)
chicken nuggets
sweet potato fries
grilled chicken/rotissere (sp?)
mini pizza's made with some sauce on a deli flat (Pfarm or Arnold brand) piece of bread, little sauce, little cheese...mmmm
grilled cheese
I know how streched for time you so if you have a Trader Joes near you that have excellent healthy premade foods (alot which I mentioned above) in the freezer and refridgerated cases that are easy to prepare. H is not crazy about their French Toast but its all natural and worth a try.
Hope this helps!!
Great suggestions! Thanks!
He still loves cereal and yogurt and will let us feed him that. But I want him to continue to self feed and all these ideas are great.
We gave him some egg today (just a bit) but I'm taking that slow as my nephew had an egg allergy. And I'm thinking of those Gerber Graduates finger food meals, too.
His weight gain slowed down (woo hoo) but I want to make sure he's getting enough nutrients.

Mikey loves well-cooked broccoli and carrots as well as slightly undercooked asparagus. Bread/toast is a lifesaver when we're in a restaurant as he can keep himself occupied pulling it apart and chewing on the crust for a long time.
