Vacationing in a different time zone ?

We are going to California soon with our LO who will be about 5 1/2 mo then.  This is my first child and obviously our first vacation with her.  She is such a great sleeper right now that I have no idea what to do with the 3 hour time difference.  Do I try to keep her on our schedule and put her to bed at 5:30 out there or try to get her on Cali time?  We will be there for 10 days.  Anyone have experience with this?

Re: Vacationing in a different time zone ?

  • Just got back from a week-long vacation with my 5.5 month old that was in Mountain Time--we live in EST, so it was 2 hours difference. The first night, we put him in bed later than usual, but not on purpose (it was a family wedding, so we didn't have a ton of control over the schedule!) He woke up the next morning at 3am and didn't sleep more than 20 min at a time after that. Ugh. The next night he woke up at 5am for the day. After that he more or less adjusted (except for the general sleep disruption of any vacation). It's taken about 2 nights now that we're home for him to adjust back to "normal."

Honestly, it's hard for me to say how much was due to the time difference, and how much was just due to just the disruption of being away from home (I've traveled 2 other times with him in the same time zone, and both times his sleep was messed up!) My advise would be just to do your best, try to get him on Cali time for your sake, but expect that things aren't going to go as smoothly as at home. And enjoy your trip. :)

  • Yeah, I'm going from China to Canada in a couple weeks.  I've pretty much accepted that this will ruin DD's sleeping patterns for a while.

  • My LO is a bit younger but we traveled with LO from CA to NY and she only had one night of disrupted sleep and then adjusted herself to the time difference. After she got home though she was "jet lagged" for a day or two but then adjusted herself without much trouble. I would just accept that a night or two will be hell but our LO's are amazingly resilient. GL!
