2nd Trimester

Can there be a good reason for gaining 14 pounds in one month??

I am being totally truthful I REALLY have not been eating too much differently than I did prepregnancy or duing the 1st trimester. I only gained 5 pounds from the start of pregnancy to week 20, so the nurse and my doctor didn't think it was a big deal and were not concerned at all.

I'm thinking that some of it might be water weight (I know I've been retaining water and need to drink more) and I'm hoping the rest is just the baby, fluids and whatever other joys come along with gaining weight during pregnancy.

Has this happened to anyone else?

  • I did, but not until close to the end with my #1. CRAZY water weight gain. I could poke my ankle and see where I poked it.

Wasn't until around the last month though.  Water weight is a killer. Go drink and pee!

Yeah...my pics were so old. I got 3 kids. Nuff said. :)

  • I gained 2 lbs for the first 18 weeks and then went in for my 22 weeks today and BAM gained 8 lbs.  it's only 10 for the pregnancy but holy geez!

  • I had a friend gain something crazy like 70 pounds during her pregnancy and she literally lost 50 before she got home with the baby! It was all because of water weight! She was fairly small to begin with and they were really worried about her having pre-eclampsia but she was just fine! I would tell your doctor about your concerns and see what he/she says!
  • i have noticed that i lose between 2 and 4 pounds from night before bed to the next morning. it seems like everything i eat and drink during the day backs up and gets digested at night (plus the 2-3 trips to pee in the middle of the night).

  • That happened to me! I had only gained 1lb at 12 weeks and 4lbs by 17 weeks and then inbetween that appt. and 5 weeks later at my 22 week appt. I had gained 14lbs!!! My Dr. was none to happy about it, but I really do not know how that happened. I think there was just a big growth spurt, coupled with water retention and also not watching what I was eating.

I'm weighing myself every day again so that I can see if it starts to spike again. I've gained about a pound since then. I'm also cutting back on sweets and fast food.

My friend said she gained almost all of her weight in 2nd tri and lost weight in 3rd. Others say they gained mostly in 3rd. I think it just depends on your body type. I'm just glad I'm not the only one! LOl. :)

  • During my last pregnancy I gained 13lbs between weeks 19 and 23 and I swore I wasn't eating any differently. By the next appointment a month later I had actually dropped a pound. It's scary to pack on the pounds, but it will be okay!.. unless your doctor says otherwise!

  • Since this is summertime, it's probably water weight, and a touch of baby growing too, but I'm going with mostly water weight.

You will be amazed at how fast any excess water will come off when you have LO. Hopefully it won't be too bad.

  • At about 20 weeks with DD I packed on some weight but I also had GD. Hopefully yours is water!
