Babies: 3 - 6 Months

Awake but drowsy...

Is not working for me. I've been reading the Baby Whisperer and trying her "shush pat" and "PU / PD" methods. I have to get him to sleep in his crib at daycare, and I have no idea why we didn't start this earlier. I'm kicking myself.

LO cried for four hours today (twice, for 2 hours) while I was trying to get him to sleep. I put him down in his crib awake but drowsy, patted his back and shushed. He would go to sleep, and twice stayed asleep for ~25 minutes, but then would wake and cry. I could calm him without picking him up, but never enough to fall, and stay, asleep. Then, I didn't know how long I should try. I mean, that could have gone on all day. So I decided to stop after the nap window of 2 hours.

He got really fussy a bit ago, so I bathed him and held him, and then figured that if he didn't have a nap, he was going to be a nightmare later tonight. So I tried to put him in the crib and he'd start screaming before I could even lay him down. I finally put him in the bassinet and he's been passed out for half an hour.

Gah. What am I doing wrong?

Re: Awake but drowsy...

  • It sounds like you are doing it right. He is just fighting it. Maybe you should try it differently to acclimate him to the crib. Put him down drowsy, set a time limit to let him cry ( a minute or 5 mins whatever you think is best). Then go in and calm him down. If it doesn't work. Take him out and calm him down. Put him back in. Repeat. Sometimes they still need to be picked up before they can self soothe. Thats what worked for us. Sometimes she just needs to be held. I still put her down drowsy but after being held she goes to sleep. She doesn't need it as much at all anymore but we had to built up to it. GL!

  • Any kind of sleep training takes time.  You just have to be consistent.  Keep up with the pat/shhh  (the PU/PD might be too overstimulating, but like a PP said, maybe your LO needs to be held to calm down).

With DD, picking her up just wakes her up more, so we pat/shhh.

Every baby is different though. DD thrives on a structured routine and predictability.  The minute I deviate from a 'routine' she gets upset so for her, sleep training was really easy.
