Babies: 3 - 6 Months

? From 0-3 re: sippy cups.

So I go back to school in January. If it's in my power, I will not be giving LO any bottles at all. I want to EBF. I will only be gone 3-4 hours Monday-Thursday, or less days depending on my schedule. Will LO be old enough to drink BM from a sippy cup while I'm in class or am I delusional. He'll be a little over 5 months. Thanks :)

  • Most people I know introduce a sippy at about 6 months.  It will take a lot of practice for most kids.  DS1 didn't get it till closer to 10 months.  I know of one child that got it right around 6.

  • Just out of curiosity, why are you opposed to a bottle?

I figured if I wait until then to introduce it he won't take it. I really don't plan on giving him a bottle until then, only bc I have to. So was curious about the sippy cup. Obviously if he can't use the sippy cup, he will get a bottle while I'm gone.

  • We just started giving DD a sippy cup, she's almost five months. It took her a couple tries to figure out what she was supposed to do with it, but she does great now! And she's only had a bottle a couple times.
  • You might have to experiment with a few different kinds of sippy cups to find one your LO likes.  I know Tommee Tippee (sp?) makes a cup for 4mo+.  However most sippy cups for babies under 9mo only hold about 5 ounces and a lot of babies at 5 months are drinking nearly 8 ounces, which isn't a huge problem, you could just refill the cup until she's full (however if I take the bottle away from DD before she's done she'll scream bloody murder!).

Introduce the sippy cup early b/c it will take a while for her to get used to it - she may not have the coordination to feed herself and so her care provider or you will need to hold it for her (like a bottle).

But all in all, if you are patient, I think it would work.
