Babies: 3 - 6 Months

Starting cereal a little early?

This isn't meant at all to start a "ZOMG! Four months is the EARLIEST you can start!!!!" debate :)

Starfish's pedi told her to start her LO on cereal a few days before her 4 month appt so that if there were any issues or questions, the pedi could address them at the appointment.  Otherwise, without a specific appointment, most of us won't see the pedi again for another two months.

I was just wondering if anyone else had been given this advice.  It's just a matter of a week or so and I'm thinking I might try it out.

  • Each of my LO's pedi's (we lived in a different state when DS was an infant so he had a different pedi at this age) gave the go ahead for cereal early. DS was excessively hungry, drinking 45-47 oz of formula a day by three months old, so his pedi said to start cereal to get him down to the recommended 28-32 oz of formula a day. DD doubled her birthweight by 2 months old and was drinking 40 oz a day by 2 months old, so the pedi said to go ahead and start cereal whenever I was ready, so I started at 3 months. Both did great with it.

I am of the opinion that it is just food, not drugs. If your child takes to the spoon and seems to like eating, there is nothing wrong with it.

     THAT IS MY OPINION THOUGH,

totally agree with you! my pedi had my lo start cereal at 2 1/2 months hes ebf but wants to nurse way to much, and its not just comfort nursing, since we started cereal nursing has gotten much much better!

  • My pedi told me to try and make it to 6 months, so I guess that's the opposite advice lol.

  • I just started doing this sort of thing without pedi's advice (not going against her advice, we just didn't ask her beforehand). DS has his 4-month appt. on Monday but for the past few weeks, he's been having more than 40oz of formula a day. So, on Tuesday we started putting some rice cereal in his bottles for his last feeding before bedtime and the first feeding when he wakes up. It seems to help with him not eat as much formula during the day.
