I know this topic is covered extensively, but I just thought I'd post about this.
I should start by saying that I'm "one of those people" avoiding deli meats and soft cheeses (unless they're cooked) because of the risk of listeriosis. My doc advised me to avoid them (even pasteurized soft cheese). I LOVE sandwiches and salads, so it's definitely hard to avoid cold cuts, blue cheese, feta, etc... but to me it's not worth the risk.
That said, I am the type who always wants to know WHY I'm being told to avoid something. So I've been doing some research and I found this great site that explains (in detail) which foods are riskiest, which carry only a moderate risk, and which are generally considered safe. And most importantly, it gives an explanation for each food. Here's the site:

The site is from the Australian government, but it definitely applies to those of us in the U.S. and elsewhere.
