Pre-school Moms - Holidays

Just seeing if this is inline with what everyone has - I was given a sheet yesterday to sign that says I agree that months with holidays will not be discounted on tuition.  A list of holidays was attached and now I am looking at it - there are five full weeks of holidays.  That's 5 out of the 40 weeks and a couple days the school is in session.  It just seems like a bit much to me - but maybe it's the norm.

Re: Pre-school Moms - Holidays

  • I think it's pretty normal.  Most MDO/Pre-School's follow the schedule of the school district they are in.  So you'll have time off at Christmas, Spring Break, etc as well as all the other normal holidays.  I will say 5 weeks seems excessive, but is it including breaks between 'sessions'?  Kaitlyn's MDO does this... There's a week long break between Spring-Summer-Fall, plus a week or 2 at Christmas... That would easily add up to 4-5 weeks.

  • We don't sign a specific sheet that says exactly that, but we do have to pay for 10 full months total.  We sign a sheet that says we're aware we're paying for 10 months of school.  (We pay for half the tenth month in August, and half in June.)

Our preschool follows Conroe ISD's calendar.  This year they are off a full week at Thanksgiving, two weeks at Christmas, plus a week at Spring Break.  In between there are other holidays here and there which probably add up to five weeks of holiday time.

  • Normal. DD's school follows Spring Branch ISD, plus is closed a week between spring and summer and between summer and fall (closed this week, opens Sept 1).

The real kicker in our case is that her school is both a MDO/preschool AND a fulltime daycare. So the school isn't really "closed", because the fulltime kids still go, but it's not open as MDO/preschool and those kids can only attend on "closed" days if they pay $30/day.

But the explanation for no discount on short months is that they have taken into account the holidays and averaged the cost over all the months.

  • That is pretty normal. Rena's school is closed a week at Thanksgiving, 2 weeks at Christmas, one week for spring break, and then several other random days for in-services, etc. The child-care center remains open during this time (except on actual holidays like Christmas day) and we have to pay $25 a day if we drop her off during those weeks. It seems crazy to pay a full month's tuition (which is not cheap!) and then pay for daily care on top of that during holiday weeks!

  • Neither schools Madeline has attended are closed for a full week EVER during the year.  They are closed for the standard National holidays - Christmas (close early on the Eve), Thanksgiving & day after, Labor Day, 4th of July, Memorial Day, New Year's Day, and usually 2 in-service days - one in Spring and one in Fall.
