Question: Need advice!

So our 20wk u/s was yesterday, I was so excited to find out what we are having! However, the tech we had was terrible and rude, she spend less then 10 minutes with us. I should say baby was sleepy, but she didn't even try, she said to us, "I THINK its a girl, but I don't have a clue!" (No *** jack, "you don't have a clue!) Don't you think she would have some techniques to try to get baby to move! NOPE, nothing! So needless to say I was a little disappointed, and very sour feelings towards this tech!

Thank heavens baby is healthy though!

I'm looking into having an elective u/s so that we can have a more sure answer on the gender. How much is too much to pay? Or those of you who did an elective u/s can I be nosey and ask how much you paid?

 Thanks!

Re: Question: Need advice!

  • I'm not sure how much an elective u/s is, but I'm glad you both are healthy! Congrats!

  • I would call your doctor and ask to have them look at the U/S tech's pictures and see what sex they think it is. State factually what the tech said and did/didn't do and how you felt nervous she did not do an adequate job. Say you just want it confirmed with the MD that LO appears healthy and if they can tell... what the gender is. They need to know if their staff is not doing a good job. If she isn't doing a good job for you, what if she misses something important on someone else? You may find out the gender this way and without costing a thing!
  • Was your u/s the anatomy scan?  I would be worried that 10min was not nearly enough time to see what she needed to and do all the measurements.  My u/s was over half an hour, and she didn't spend any unnecessary time on anything.  She was constantly measuring and taking snapshots of particular parts.  Maybe talk to your doctor about your disappointment?  And I'd call and complain about the tech's attitude.  That is just ridiculous.  Maybe they will let you do it over!

I totally agree with all of this.

  • Yes, this was our anatomy scan, can you believe it!

She said baby looks healthy, and that the Dr. would be following up in a few days!

I think I will call today! Thanks!

Seriously if thats what they call an anatomy scan, I would be extremely worried.  This is just my first, but I've heard ladies talking about having an scan last over an hour.  Did they do both a vaginal and an abdominal ultrasound?  I had both, they also looked and measured the brain a TON, the heart a TON, they looked at the kidneys and stomach and measured them, all the bones and measured them, they even looked for cleft palate and lip.  Not to mention the time they spent on the spine.  They measured my cervix, ute, placenta, made sure it looked like enough amniotic fluid for baby, measured the umbilical cord and the veins, listened to the heartbeat...  They looked at the genitals but not for very long, just enough to verify.  I can't imagine an u/s tech do all that in less than 10mins.

I would definitely call your doctor with concerns!  GL!

Mine was like 40 minutes or so, don't really remember. But... she measured the heck out of everything! It was only abdominal though.

This...also the cost of an elective u/s probably varies place to place but I think at a place near me it's $150ish for what they call a gender peak and then it goes up from there as you get into longer sessions, and 3D/4D

  • omg that's awful!  We had a real b*tch for our first ultrasound.  She yelled at me because my bladder wasn't full enough.  Meanwhile I could barely walk because I felt like I was gonna burst I had drank SO much water!

I have mine next week, but from what I've heard, there's no way all that could have been done in 10 minutes.  Anyone working these jobs should really have some people skills!  Women go in there so excited/nervous, to be rushed out or treated rudely... it's not right!

  • Yea, 10 minutes doesn't seem like nearly long enough! Mine was yesterday and was about 45 minutes. I would definatley talk to your dr. My tech seemed to have a lot to look for, I don't see how it could be done in 10 minutes.

You say she's sleepy, but that's no excuse. Our little man was laying tucked in a ball, his chin was on his chest and he was kind of rolled up on the L side of my tummy. Even with that, the tech had me lay on my side and still got his  measurements ( I don't have the best pics, lol) he didn't just give up.

Sounds like that lady needs to find a new job, she has some serious job burn out!

ALL OF THIS! My tech mentioned that she had to take over 100 pictures which included measurements of everything listed above.  My LO was being a bit stubborn and wouldn't open his mouth wide enough/look in the right direction for the palate measurement, but the tech tried EVERYTHING she could to get him to cooperate. I think mine lasted about 50-60 minutes. CALL and let them know!!

  • Sounds like the other ladies covered the a/s part, I haven't had mine yet so I can't say.

However I did have an elective u/s at "Peek a Baby" a store type place not medical similar to "Womb with a View", and it was $45 and it is refundable (up to $25) if they turn out to be wrong.  LO wouldn't cooperate and so the tech used the wand to prod my belly and asked me to prod it gently until our little guy moved.  Then his umbilical cord was in the way, more prodding and she snapped a pic.  She said, "See that?  That's definitely a penis."  It was supposed to be 5 minutes but was probably longer and the tech there knew how to get LO moving.

I'm sorry you had a bad experience and I really hope you report it.
