*sighs, and dials the phone... again*

Today is call contractors day.  Insurance is paying for the walls & ceiling to be replaced instead of cleanned and repaired in the master suite, an electrician to redo the wiring (something about the heat most likely affecting the wires in the walls), someone to install the windows, and the independent contractor to do the code inspections.

We get to pick the contractors.

So now, I have to get estimates to compare.  And so far, all I have gotten is voicemail.

"Hi, my name is thejennigirl, and we recently suffered a small housefire.  We're looking for contractors willing to give estimates to be compared.  We need to have multiple large windows installed, the walls & ceiling replaced in two rooms, and electrical wiring replaced in one room.  We will also need a seperate estimate for the cost of installing installation in the walls of both rooms.  We would like to have the estimates completed by next Wednesday, and work to be done within the following 3-4 weeks.  If you can return my call at [phone number] as soon as possible, I would appreciate it.  If I am not available, please leave a message letting me know if you would be interested and times & dates good for you.  Thanks!"

I hate leaving long voice mail, but jeez, I want them to know what we are wanting and when we want/need it done.

Anyone wanna come & make my 20 billion more phonecalls?

  • If insurance will reimburse me at my going rate - sure!

Hope you find someone who is great to work with and can get it done quickly!

  • Sometimes the less info you give them the more likely they are to call you back.  At least I found this true with some work we had done for the homeowners association.  I would call and leave a message "this is susie and we are needing some electrical work done.  Please call me back at xxx"  When they called I asked if they could meet me to discuss possibilities and that the work was for the signs for the neighborhood.  Then when we met I would ask for a written quote.

Once you have them out there they have some time invested and are more likely to give you what you need.

  • You know what annoys me?  The contractor lists in the yellow pages for 2 counties includes businesses over 200 miles away.  Now what sense does THAT make?!

Oh - if the job is big enough, they'll travel.

    I'm sure.

I'm annoyed because I'm the yellow pages instead of online, because I want to hire someone LOCAL, and support the people in my immediate economy.  Dudes over 200 miles away are of no interest to me.
