We just found out that I tested positive for GBS colonization. I know that it can and will be taken care of to ensure the health of Baby Munchkin, but it still threw me for a loop.
why would they test you so early? Does it just hang around? I have only heard of them testing around 38 weeks or so.
I was tested as I was being induced and I was gbs + They just hung a bag of antibiotics onto my already plentiful supply of everything else on the pole.
It was no big deal at all really. I didn't even notice it.

I tested GBS+ with DS. I agree, it seems really early to check, but usually if they find you're GBS+ they don't change their mind if you're neg later in the pg (or even subsequent pg). There was antibiotics in an IV that I needed to get at least 4 hours before delivery (which is kind of hard to gauge, right?). I was pretty upset about the whole thing with DS because I was a natural birth mom and knew it'd be a tether on me. I had to come into the hospital maybe a little earlier than I would have wanted (rather than laboring at home for another hour or so), and staying still during the IV was a pain, but it didn't last long and then it was back to normal laboring. Not a huge deal in the scheme of things IMO.
A possibility was born the day you were born and will live as long as you live.

I had to change doctors at 14 weeks, as the previous doctor hadn't even given me an exam (the lab at the old doctor's office drew 1 vial of blood the day that they told me I was pregnant and I never got results from that!). She wanted to start from scratch with everything and said that she wanted to know everything that we'd be dealing with.
I'll get antibiotics when I go into labor (the baby will get them after delivery), and not really worried about that. What has me on edge is that a friend of my lost her newborn a month ago due to complications from GBS infection.

Oh my goodness, that's awful. I'm so sorry to hear that. I'm sure it'd be really hard to shake that thought after testing +, but I'm sure that with the IV before delivery and antibiotics for LO afterward everything will be just fine.

wow. well I was super sick with ds and was induced at 35 weeks. ds had a host of problems and was transferred to another hospital via amubulance to go to the nicu and so I honestly have no clue what they did for him. But I know the GBS thing was the least of my worries. That is super scary, but I think if you get the antibiotics and what not, it should take care of everything.

Does this mean they found it in your urine? They found this with me at my 6 week appointment. I was put on antibiotics for 3 days to clear it up and was supposed to go back in 4 weeks to see if it was gone. However, here I am at 14 weeks and still haven't been back. Won't go back until 17 weeks.
I imagine if it's in the urine again, they'll put me back on antibiotics. If it stays, I'll probably have to stay on antibiotics most of my pg (which I am none too thrilled about - but it's better than the consequences). GL
I tested + with DS. Its no big deal they just give you meds through your IV when you go into labor. the only downside to it is that that antibiotics can cause a burning feeling when they go in.

I tested positive early with DD. The second check closer to my EDD showed I was still postive. They hung the antibiotics and it was no big deal. Same song and dance with DS. However with DS my labor was so short that they were unable to give me the 2 rounds in my IV. DS was fine and we have had no problems with him at all.

Why did they test so early? GBS comes and goes, so you could be negative by the time your baby comes and have unnecessary antibiotics.
GBS is not a big deal at all. You get some penicillin when you're in labor.
