deli meats

what are your thoughts? i am googling and seeing conflcting info.. i would really like to be more relaxed about this pregnancy and not think about every little thing - but if it is truly bad, then i'll avoid. i'm craving a roast beef wrap right now (and yes, it's only 9 in the morning! lol).  i also used to eat subway at least 2x per week during the workweek - i love the spicy BMT!!  i see people say it's better if you heat it up but that would sort of ruin it for me lol.

Re: deli meats

  • This is how my doc explained it to me - cold cuts that are properly kept and have a high turnover (like at the supermarket, or even Subway) are probably fine. What he said to really avoid are the ones that are prepackaged, because the listeria has a chance to grow. Also, they tend not to be refrigerated as well or consistantly. To quote him exactly "In my 20 plus years as an OB, I have never seen a case of listeria from someone who ate a ham and cheese from Blimpies".

  • My Dr. said she wasn't worried about luncheon meat at all.  If I wanted to heat it up I could but she wasn't restricting me from eating it either way.

  • I'll still eat Subway.  I've started to buy the deli meat from the counter, the ones where they slice it in front of you.  I don't know if it's any safer, but I feel better about eating that than the pre-packaged meats.

  • I have avoided it 100% since getting pregnant and plan to do so throughout my pregnancy.

I'm not sure if things are worse in Canada but we have enough recalled meat here due to listeria that I am not taking my chances. I have been able to find enough substitutes for my meals that it is not cause me any trouble to go without.

  • My doctor said as long as you heat them in the microwave for 15 seconds prior to eating them, it will kill any bacteria
  • I've been avoiding them so far. My doc said to avoid all deli meats and soft cheeses, and I'm kinda paranoid so I listened.

Honestly, at first I thought the risk was really small and maybe I could cave and have a turkey sandwich every once and awhile. But just a couple days ago I heard that there was a huge deli meat recall (due to listeria) here in the US. So while it might be rare, it does happen... and it's important to be aware of the risk.

That being said, as long as it's heated up, it's fine. If you don't like hot deli meat (who does?!) I suppose you could let it cool in the fridge.
