Hi ladies! I'm fairly new to the board and looked for a post on this but couldn't find one...
My OB delivers at United Hospital in St. Paul. Has anyone delivered or will deliver there and can tell me what it is like? Just trying to get info on the hospital to make sure it is the right choice.
Thanks!
Re: United Hospital in St. Paul
Pros:
- Children's Hospital is right next door.
- They specialize in high-risk pregnancies.
Cons:
- They are very busy.
- You will not get as much one on one time.
Overall, I have heard positive results. They do not have a lot of pending law suits so you should be good.
It's all right. If you have a high risk pregnancy, it would be my number one choice (that, or Abbott, which is next to Children's in Minneapolis).
The hospital itself was nice, the nurses were all very nice. I didn't like my OBs, though. I had one OB that I liked during my 36 hour labor. But my c-section experience was a nightmare (epidural didn't work, and I wasn't offered general anesthesia).
But they brought my baby to me right away in recovery to breastfeed and have contact. DH was with him the whole time. They didn't give him a bath until he had breastfed and we had skin-skin. All of that was very good.
My stay was pretty good. It was hit or miss with the nurses and the breastfeeding advice, but I think that's the case with a lot of the bigger hospitals. And there are people coming into your room every 5 minutes, and it's impossible to get any rest.
But overall, I'd say that the actual hospital itself wasn't that bad.
Agreed on the every five minutes someone is in the room. It's very confusing since there are so many things to monitor...me, baby, lact. consultants, ECFE rep.
Pros I'd add:
AMAZING lactation consultant who took me to the store and got me two underwire bras. I was beyond psyched to get underwire (JCPenny shopping was shocking with what those bras do... lol)
Had I gone there for my 2nd pg, I would not have had weeks of hell because I would have been admitted to the cardiology unit instead of discharged. I'm a witness to the fact that rare things can happen to YOU and United has great doctors...or are connected to them.
I had a successful first delivery and have no regrets because of Children's Hospital being there. I thought I was in the clear for baby #2 so I went to Woodwinds. My OB dr and LD& nurse at United were 100x better. I still tear up at the amazing memories. Woodwinds has AMAZING tubs and I really liked all the nurses at Woodwinds a lot more than United, where it was often hard to understand them (super sweet ladies but seriously, after you delivering your first baby, no sleep the night before and it's 2am, you sort of want to not have to concentrate to understand what you're nurse or aid is telling you.)
You really can't go wrong at United! And keep in mind your dr may not be the one to deliver you.
I went to Parkview Clinic in Maplewood and delivered at United Hospital last November.
I also worked at United at the time.. I knew most of the docs, a lot of the nurses on the Ob floor, (because I had preterm labor) Loved that since I had GD and there could have been complications that the high risk doctors were all available and also Childrens is right down the hall! Not to mention your child is a patient at childrens technically while you are in the hospital
Awesome experience. I did a few of the classes one on breastfeeding and then some other one I don't remember I was just SUPER bored lol Everyone was so nice and helpful.
